The fragrance emitted by thousands of flowers absorbed into the pores of the soil, and only released when displaced by rain. Scientists, Isabel Bear and Richard Thomas coined the term "Petrichor".
These two scientists find themselves at odds with the nature that they so bravely study. Here they are immortalized in a desert rain, as out of place as can be, surrounded by the dangers and wonders of life.

Mamacita visited the gallery one day about two years ago. She was hot and hungry. It was the middle of summer. It seemed like she had just had a litter, and was completely exhausted. I tried to get close to her, but she shied away and let me know she didn’t like being touched. She rested in the AC. She ate some kibble and drank water. And after a while she left. When she came back a few days later she wasn’t alone. Apparently she belonged to a pack of street dogs. Another pretty mamacita, white and brindle who could’ve been her sister. A large brown male with a nub for a tail, who I called Stubby. And the alpha, a smallish white-ish dog I called Whitey who seemed to take the protection of the group seriously.
They were familiar faces around the gallery for almost 2 years. They were always polite. I knew they felt safe at the gallery. Out on the street they took their chances, they were definitely street dogs. They would show up stained in motor oil and dirt and smelling like garbage or skunk. sometimes were pretty banged up. I think they could be trouble, but around ths gallery they were little angels. We were close, I think, even though there was still a no petting, no touch policy between us. Mamacita would sleep at my feet when I painted. She knew she could relax around me. I liked their company. One day, maybe a year ago, they didn’t show up. I haven’t seen them since.
I like to think they found an even better place. I missed them, so made a painting honouring them. And then I made another. Soon there was a series of paintings and the dogs started to appear in some of my other work too. They are part of a series I call, “Ghosts of the Desert”. I felt that relocating them to the wilderness would liberate them from the street. Somehow it makes them feel even more lost, but that’s ok.
This painting is the latest in the series. A portrait called “the pack at rest”. It’s how I like to remember them.

Sweet Angel Roque, son of Corona, the king of the streets here in Todos Santos. Thankfully Corona can no longer sire offspring, and next month Roque will be “liberated” at the free clinic thanks to the kind volunteers at Perros Santos. Come on out to the brewery and help us help them help the animals. Lots of amazing things to bid on.

Tomorrow, Friday Nov 7 is the first Friday of November which means the time is upon us for the first Todos Santos Art Walk of the season. Summer’s over and Galeria Militar is back to regular scheduled hours of operation. Among the things I’m stoked to share is this new series of abstracted landscapes.

Feels good to finally be able to share some of what I’ve been doing lately. This summer has been me catching up on long overdue commission work. My dear friend, Andy has been waiting at least 3 years (yikes) for this one.
