Night walk to rofo ft. Meatstick

The Makan Dulu cookbook (which lives inside of the Makan Dulu table featured in my previous post) is a small collection of some staple Balinese recipes which I have eaten since I was a baby. The dishes which these various base preparations produce fills a space in my soul, and belly which I can’t seem to satisfy with anything else. Balinese food is characteristically packed with flavor and spices. Not only are many of the ingredient combinations in Balinese cuisine very delicious, their combination allows for the proper activation, and release of beneficial properties. For example, the presence of black pepper paired with turmeric allows for the body to more effectively take advantage of turmeric’s extremely health-beneficial properties. With this book I hope to be able to capture, replicate, and add to my world of personal home foods, and traditional family dishes from the side of myself which I find difficult to activate and connect to sometimes, especially between visits which can be relatively infrequent and all too short. It is also my hope that others may want to follow some of these recipes and be able to tap into the joy, and comfort I feel when I prepare and eat these dishes. All these recipes are intended to make 1-2 portions. Typically I can get about one hot meal and some leftovers for another sitting, or large snack out of a preparation serving, however mileage may vary depending on the eater’s appetite. The table in "Makan Dulu" is designed to house a walnut cutting board and the Makan Dulu cookbook on the shelf under the table. This space provides enough space to store other items necessary for preparing a meal such as secondary cutting boards for multiple people to help prepare ingredients, a mortar and pestle, knives, and measuring tools. Constructed out of long lasting materials, this piece is intended to outlive the maker and perhaps fall into the category of “heirloom”; a title which originally referred to a literal loom, or other tool which was passed through generations to provide use value (in this case sustenance) beyond it’s first owner. This piece as an ensamble explores the themes of entropy, sustinance, and sustainabilty through the process of actively gathering, rearranging, consuming, and dispursing matter and resources from the creation of the piece itself, to it’s use to create and eat meals, to it’s bequethal and ultimate repurposing of it’s constituent parts, thus completing MakanDulu’s full entropic cycle.
