starting out… I moved from Madrid (Spain) to the Seattle area in February 2001. I was 41 and started working at an IT company for the first time after being at the university in Madrid for many years. I knew no one here. I thought this would help me build a more financially stable life.
.
I rented an apartment in Kirkland and started attending oil painting classes at the Kirkland Arts Center
@kirklandartscenter for many years.
My father was a painter and an art maker. From him, I was given permission to be fearless, audacious, resilient—an artist. I worked and painted alone for many years, and I also made wonderful friends.
.
And this is how I started painting and expanding my creative wonder as a maker: figurative art, abstract art, 3D objects.
.
🌀 Always—and continuously—making, practicing, painting, thinking, seeing art, reading art, beginning. 🌀
🏺I came across Betty Woodman many years ago through her daughter, Francesca Woodman. Betty was an American ceramic artist known for turning pottery into bold contemporary art. To me, she transformed ceramics into bold paintings.
Here is Betty in front of her Il Giardino Dipinto, 1993 (glazed earthenware, epoxy resin, lacquer, paint, 108 x 420 inches.)

I started deconstructing still lifes last year with this red vase on a pedestal (last picture.)
Her influence in my installation ✨The Vase Garden✨, now on view at Shift Gallery
@shiftgallery.seattle , is clear. My way is the other way around: I go from painting still lifes to deconstructing them—not only the objects that are represented, but also the object of still life itself: frame and descriptive elements, using the wall as a white canvas.
