The Afro isn’t just a look; it’s a symbol. From the Civil Rights era to today, it represents unapologetic authenticity and natural beauty. Renaming it risks diminishing that legacy while profiting from the very aesthetic it helped create. Fashion should celebrate innovation without erasing origins. This is a difficult but necessary post.
I stand in full support of MiShay McCloud.
Since her statement, I’ve seen both compassion and criticism, especially questions about timing. Let’s be clear: there is no timeline on trauma. Speaking up takes years for many. For some, it never happens at all. What matters is that she spoke.
Right now, other young women are processing their own experiences. Some are finding the courage to even consider coming forward. That process is real. It’s heavy. And social media is not always a safe place to land when you do.
I’m not speaking from a distance. I know what this feels like. I was touched by older men and a female relative as a youth, and I was raped as a young adult. It took me years to say that out loud. There are still parts of my childhood I’ve never fully shared. So when someone finds the strength to speak, I understand the weight behind it.
What MiShay shared is not vague. The level of detail, his home, his body, his car, these are not things someone fabricates lightly. And more importantly, she spoke about how those experiences impacted the trajectory of her life. That matters. That deserves to be heard with care, not dismissed with suspicion.
This is not about social media noise, defamation, or entertainment. This is about accountability. Across the board.
I’ve been aware of this since Super Bowl weekend and chose not to speak until I was given permission. Now that I have that permission, I’m using my voice responsibly, as a human being and as a member of the press.
To the parents: when your children speak, believe them. Listen to them. Protect them!
We are living in a time where silence has been expected, especially from Black women. Where people assume we will endure, suppress, and continue to show up without being heard.
That ends today.
Accountability is not optional. Truth is not convenient. And support should not come with conditions.
