here's what it's about:
Friendship is hard because everything is hard. This book examines social structures to demonstrate how people mend an unravelling social fabric.
Why is it hard to make and keep friends as an adult? Even if you finally find time to see each other, can you connect more deeply than just catching up over coffee? How many do you count as ride-or-die pals whoâll always show up with effervescent banter and deep conversation â your âchosen family?â
Widespread loneliness reflects a world of crappy jobs and unaffordable housing that makes it almost impossible to have close, interwoven friendships. A dwindling social safety net takes a toll on us and on our relationships. Particularly for queer people, friendships can be crucial relations of equality, constancy, and care. Still, we disappoint each other and fall into irreparable conflict.
A less lonely world is possible. Through interviews, research, and personal narrative, this book shows how people build tight connections despite living in the austere conditions of colonial capitalism â boldly weaving a new social fabric as this one unravels.
just published online through @crucialcomix , we're thrilled to share print and pdf editions of Cee Lavery's latest comic, "Il Terzo Bronzo":
In Il Terzo Bronzo, Cee Lavery entwines two unsolved mysteries: the origins and fate of a group of ancient Greek bronze statues found sunk off the coast of Calabria in the 1970s, and the cryptic roots of a family name.
The full story of each mystery may remain lost in the depths of time, half-submerged in obscurity. A reminder of the things in this world we have to simply wonder at, Il Terzo Bronzo explores the pleasures of the unknowable.

happy may day! đ„đč new at sheerspite.ca, a beautifully designed anti-AI, anti-technofascism magazine led by cherished friend of the press @kellzhuynh aka @bitterfruit.design :
"In our late-stage capitalist society dominated by tech feudalism, Daedalus magazine serves as a platform for those seeking an anti-tech capitalist and fascist refuge; a guide to reclaiming agency and autonomy. Women run and supported by the community, Daedalus is not a tech magazine despite tech being a common thread. It is a platform to address social issues impacted by tech. Bringing together members of the community to share stories of resistance and care."
exceptionally honoured to have gotten such kind and generous blurbs from authors i deeply admire for "The Politics of Lonely: Why Is Friendship So Hard?"
by Lee, who runs sheer spite, publishing from @fernpub this september, up for preorder now. đ
new in distro: three great zines from the inimitable @craftordiy.art ! so thrilled to help make these zines more available, i am a huge fan of elliott's work: these are zines that champion connection, DIY spirit, COVID-cautious community building, and finding joy and connection even when it's hard.
available in print and digitally from sheerspite.ca.
âwanderer started as a perzine (personal zine) about getting settled in a small town that is 2,801 miles away from your small town of origin. over the years it has evolved into a general diary of personal growth, shared through illustrations and prose. topics in this issue include: diy music, covid grief, sex, community organizing, mutual aid, personal reflection, travel, some gender stuff.â (LOVE a classic mixed-bag perzine!!)
POSTHUMOUS: a tribute to defunct DIY music venues. 27 contributors, 40 pages, compiled from submissions; photos, writing, flyers from various venues.
"PROBLEM" SKIN is âan honest attempt to usher skin conditions into the body acceptance movement. this new issue includes entries on acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, chronic urticaria, skin discoloration, darier disease, excoriation (skin picking) and other unspecified skin struggles. you wont find any skin care advice here, just very frank talk about skin conditions and how they affect the various contributorsâ lives.â
I made some fridge magnets, mostly for my own entertainment but you can also have one if you want! avl on sheerspite.ca for $2-5 sliding scale :)
(really enjoyed prowling ebay listings for the other magnets shown around it which i sadly do not personally own or have available for sale)
thrilled to share @cindymilstein 's latest: as always, it is free to download or $0-1 + shipping to have a printed copy mailed to you.
âWhen the pandemic first began and the world suddenly shut down, I saw promise in the ways that many people leaned into anarchistic practices. Sure, I became bleakly depressed because of the mass abandonment of so many of us by, say, capitalism, and narratives about isolation that were twisted by individualism, authoritarianism, and heteronormative ideas of kinship. I hated, for example, the use of the phrase âsocial distancingâ versus what we should have insisted on calling âphysical distancingâ; we needed each other socially â and even within our own circles, often missed the mark on creatively doing it well.
Still, as if mirroring springâs emergence that year, mutual aid blossomed almost overnight. For instance, an epidemiologist in the city where I was sheltering in place put out word via their social media that theyâd be glad to lend whatever pandemic advice they could, from their own research and knowledge, voluntarily and directly, defying the focus on the CDC, White House, and other less-than-trustworthy sources. Across Turtle Island, to point to another illustration, Mutual Aid Disaster Relief and Indigenous Mutual Aid modeled radical ethics and practices for the many liberals whoâd dived into do-it-ourselves forms of reciprocity."

it would be easier to make a post of the cis art sheer spite stocks but that would be an insane thing to do on trans day of visibility.
so this is a reminder that sheer spite is run by one (1) weary transsexual, that's me, lee, and most of the stuff we publish and distribute is by other trans people, not as a moral principle but just because i love trans people and i love the work we make.
anyways sheer spite is not good at making money but it's decent at moving the most cash possible out of the stuff you buy to its authors, most of whom are broke and struggling. we also pay out royalties quarterly so anything you buy today will put more money in trans authors' pockets asap and i'm gonna level with you, it would really help them.
today is also observed as buy a trans woman a pizza day, in honour and memory of Mira Bellwether, who wrote Fucking Trans Women, one of the best zines ever. so hop to it and get some gals some pizza, ok?
added a bunch of stuff to sheer spite's US store (sheerspite.bigcartel.com)!
all of these are also available from sheerspite.ca, which ships from montreal to everwhere except the US. the US store ships from the US to anywhere.
shipping involving the US is truly wretched, so i have put a lot of work into making this possible, by getting US orders shipped from the wonderful folks at @whitesquirrelco in Everett, WA. would love your help in making this worthwhile by buying a zine or telling a friend!
