@she.does.sound answers our questionnaire
What is your first memory of film?
The first film I saw in #theatres was Rush Hour haha
Do you remember the moment that made you want to be in this industry?
I wanted to work in film because I enjoy being a part of a team that comes together to collaborate creatively.
What is the most important thing about your job?
The most important thing about my job is making sure the quality of sound that I capture is the best possible under all the circumstances that I can control.
How have the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements influenced your role in the industry?
The nickname for my role in the industry is "Sound Guy" which is intrinsically sexist. The #MeToo and #TimesUp movement definitely made people more aware of the "boys club" slang commonly used to describe some crew roles.
What is the best thing about being a #woman in the industry?
The best thing about being a woman in the industry is being able to perform my technical duties without my skills being questioned.
Who is your mentor?
I never had a mentor, I had technical theoretical training at school, but everything I know about location sound I've learned by being on set and watching other sound recordists work. I'm looking to mentor other women who are interested in doing sound so that they can learn from my mistakes and experiences.
What is the biggest misconception about working in the industry?
The biggest misconception about working in the industry is that all projects are huge Hollywood productions and that it's hard to break into.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Get a technical education in what you love doing right out of high school. Don't wait.
Who is your favorite woman in the industry?
Currently, my favourite woman in the industry is Sarah Thomas Moffat. I had the pleasure of working with her on a travel documentary project and hearing her talk about her journey and experiences traveling the world for work was very eye-opening about being a woman and DOP in this industry.
