Thinking about a project on your ECA property?
Don't start without a plan. Shoreline rules, steep slopes, wetlands, and critical area buffers can make projects difficult to start. We specialize in navigating these challenges while creating thoughtfuly landscape designs.

Hello Cape Cod! | @portrait.magazine.usa
In close collaboration with the project team, we helped shape the landscape to feel like a natural extension of the home. Terraced bluestone steps gently descend through the garden, guiding movement between the pool, cabana, and lawn. Durable natural materials were selected for their longevity and timeless character, while layered plantings of white hydrangea, roses, wild geraniums, and Taylor juniper bring softness, structure, and privacy. The result is an East Coast–inspired landscape designed to feel established now—and for decades to come.

Breaking Ground: Continuing a Legacy in Duvall, WA
__________________________________________
Nearly a decade after Duvall was founded, Holy Innocents built a small church at the corner of Stella and Broadway in 1923. Over the next century, the neighborhood grew up around it. As the community expanded, the church evolved—raising the original building in 1961 to create space for gatherings, then adding a north-side facility in 1989 for classrooms and additional social use. In 2004, the site became home to Adventure Community Church.
On March 16, 2020, the sanctuary was lost to a fire. In the conversations that followed, the church’s mission was reaffirmed: to share God’s love and hope in Duvall and to remain open, welcoming, and deeply connected to the community it serves. Staying rooted in this location remains a top priority.
The proposal calls for rebuilding on the original site, restoring a sanctuary similar in size and capacity to the original, with classrooms below and new accessible entrances, circulation, and restrooms. The design is intended to reflect the charm and character of “Old Duvall,” honoring the history of the original church while meeting today’s needs. Site improvements will align with the City of Duvall’s design standards.
Adventure Community Church looks forward to working collaboratively with the City of Duvall to restore this historic site and return to full operation as soon as possible.

Breaking Ground: Adventure Community Church Rebuild
For more than 100 years, this church has been a fixture in Duvall—an anchor for the community rather than just a building. Originally built in 1913, not long after the town was founded, its iconic steeple became a familiar part of the local landscape and a symbol of the generations who gathered there. In 2020, a devastating fire took that historic structure, leaving a profound loss felt throughout the community. Read more about the ACC Rebuild Story here: /rebuilding
The rebuilt landscape will introduce several new features designed to enhance community use and create a welcoming arrival. A natural playground made from organic materials will provide a safe, engaging play space. At the entry plaza, built-in seating and a fire feature will offer a comfortable gathering area for visitors.
Terraced rockeries will shape the site’s grade transitions and add visual interest, while new evergreen plantings will establish year-round privacy screening. These improvements will create a more functional, inviting outdoor space as construction progresses.

Understanding Seattle's Middle Housing Bill: What it Means for Homeowner's Property Value & Site Design
Seattle's Middle Housing Bill marks one of the most significant zoning shifts in recent decades. For homeowners and small-scale property owners, it changes what's possible on residential lots citywide - especially in neighborhoods previously zoned for single-family homes.
The goal of the legislation is to encourage more diverse housing options: duplexes, triplexes and backyard cottages (ADUs & DADUs). For property owners, this could mean new opportunities for flexibility, value, and use - but it also introduces a layer of complexity that takes thoughtful planning more important than ever.

Have an ECA Property? Here's What You Need to Know:
What’s an ECA?
In Seattle, Environmentally Critical Areas (ECAs) include steep slopes, wetlands, shorelines, and wildlife zones. These sites require thoughtful, site-sensitive design to ensure both safety and sustainability.
Redesigning in an ECA means permits—and the right team.
Any work in these zones typically involves a more complex permitting process. That’s where we come in. From feasibility, to design, to coordination with city reviewers, we guide you through every step.
ECAs come with their own set of challenges—but they’re also full of opportunity. From custom retaining walls to native planting strategies and erosion control, we are well equipped to design landscapes that are both beautiful and built to last.
Got an ECA? Let’s talk. Book a consultation to explore what’s possible on your property.

Cape Cod Comes to Seattle | @portrait.magazine.usa
One of our most memorable projects brings Cape Cod charm to the Pacific Northwest, blending traditional East Coast architecture with the energy of modern family life. From terraces and a spa to a pool, cabana, and fire pit, this garden unfolds in a series of outdoor rooms—each framed in Pennsylvania Bluestone and lush with plantings of Daphne, Oriental Lilly, Dwarf Sweet Box, and White Hydrangea.
It’s coastal living, redefined for the Pacific Northwest.

Meet the New SHD.
Our rebrand marks an important evolution — not just in how we present ourselves, but in how we continue to refine our vision, deepen our craft, and expand our impact.
This next chapter reflects who we are today: a studio rooted in the Pacific Northwest, committed to designing with intention, and driven by the belief that landscapes should do more than look beautiful — they should serve, endure, and connect.
With a foundation in environmental sensitivity and a commitment to site-specific design, our work spans a wide range of project types — from private residences to public spaces and select commercial sites. Across all scales, our approach is consistent: listen carefully, design with clarity, and build lasting relationships with our clients, our collaborators, and the land.
The rebrand is more than a new visual identity. It’s a renewed commitment to design excellence, to creative problem solving, and to delivering spaces that reflect both the character of the site and the values of the people who use them.
We invite you to explore our new look — and the work that continues to define it.

Unveiling fall surprises in every corner 🍂🌿
Thanks to well-timed August and September rains paired with warm, mild days, this year’s fall colors are more vibrant than ever!
Here’s the science: moisture keeps trees healthy, while warm days allow leaves to produce and store sugars. As cool nights set in, those sugars get trapped, intensifying the reds, golds, and oranges.
The result? A stunningly vivid autumn palette to enjoy all season long.
