Our culture worships the Promethean hero. You can see why Fredrick Nietzsche towards the end started signing letters of as Dionysus and he thought the ultra rationalist Socratic Apollo like measurements of our intellectual class had gone to fair. Dionysus is very hard to understand. While Prometheus and Apollo are so easy to understand. - **Apollo** — the god of form, craft, and faithful tending; the capacity to submit to standards older than yourself. - **Dionysus** — the god of genuine encounter who arrives uninvited; the capacity to be undone by what is genuinely other than you. - **Prometheus** — the titan who refused all limits; the capacity that becomes pathological when it treats the world as raw material to master. - **Narcissus** — the youth who died staring at his own reflection; the capacity that becomes pathological when nothing genuinely other than the self ever lands. Prometheus and Narcissus aren't opposites — they're the same disease in two costumes, both refusing the painful reality that you are a finite, separate self in a world you didn't make. Our culture has hollowed out the institutions that used to hold both in check (families, neighbourhoods, crafts, civic life, real traditions), so the pathologies have become the air everyone breathes.

why the political conversation feels so stuck. The progressive position is that more recognition will eventually deliver the security identity is supposed to provide. The reactionary position is that the older identities should be reasserted against the dissolution. Neither position can succeed because both are working within the framework that produced the problem. More recognition will not stabilise selves that have lost the structures that produced bounded selfhood in the first place. Reasserting older identities will not rebuild the structures that gave those identities their content. Both sides are arguing about which identities should be recognised, when the actual problem is that identity itself has had to become the primary site of selfhood-formation, which it cannot adequately do. The argument cannot resolve because the framework of the argument is itself the symptom.

Why authenticity is a problem. Authenticity locates the truth of a person inside them, in an inner self that only they can access. This sounds like freedom but it has three structural failures. First, it's unfalsifiable from the outside — no one else can check whether you're actually being true to your inner self, so the standard becomes self-certifying and immune to correction. Second, it requires a stable inner self to be true to, but the inner self under modern conditions is precisely what's become unstable, jumpy, and shifting, so the standard demands access to something that's no longer reliably there. Third, because the standard is purely internal, it generates an endless audit — am I really being true to myself, is this actually me, what is the real me underneath — which becomes recursive and self-consuming because there's no external check that could ever resolve the question. Authenticity collapses into performance for an inner audience that can never be satisfied, and over time the self becomes nothing but the agonised search for itself. Why sincerity doesn't have this limitation. Sincerity locates the truth of a person in the alignment between word and deed, which is observable from the outside. The standard is checkable — over time, by people who know you, watching whether what you said and what you did match up. This means the standard is anchored in something other than your own self-report. It can correct you, surprise you, hold you accountable. It also means the standard doesn't require a stable inner self to function — it only requires that you say what you mean and do what you say, which is achievable even on days when you don't know who you are. Sincerity puts the work outside the self where it can be done, rather than inside the self where it can only be agonised over. It produces character, which accumulates through visible action across time, rather than personality, which has to be performed continuously in the present moment. The cost of sincerity is that it requires witnesses — people who stay long enough to see the pattern. Its strength is that the witness is real. Authenticity's witness is only ever yourself, and that witness can never

TRUE CRIME COMEDY WALKING TOUR Sydney's got cults. It's got heists. It's got unsolved murders, it's got political extremists, and it's got one bloke who took down a brothel with a typewriter. All of it happened within about a 20-minute walk of the Opera House, and most of you have had a coffee on top of a crime scene without knowing it. I take people through the real spots. The actual corners, the actual buildings, the actual pubs where the actual shit went down. Stand-up comedy in between, because a 90-minute history lecture is a punishment, not a night out. Nominated Best Comedy, Newcastle Fringe. 🗓 23 April – 9 May 📍 Sydney Comedy Festival 🎟 Link in bio or sydneycomedyfest.com.au
