Leo watched the tides of talent. He saw the starlets arrive in sleek black sedans, their eyes hidden behind oversized glasses, and he saw them leave years later, walking past him with their heads down, carrying a single box of office supplies.

Leo didn’t move—statues are notoriously bad at physical comforting—but the sun hit his limestone cheek just right, casting a shadow that made his grin look even wider. He looked like he was chuckling.
I was here before the talkies, kid, Leo seemed to say. I’ve been peed on by poodles and hit by Buicks, and I’m still the first thing people see when they arrive at the dream factory.
The actor looked at the statue’s missing nose and the crumbling paws. He started to laugh. "You're a wreck, aren't you? But you're still smiling."
The kid stood up, dusted off his suit, and patted Leo’s remaining ear. "See ya tomorrow, Leo."
