🖌 Have you ever wondered what it takes to bring the stunning illustrations you find inside Tilbury House picture books to life? In the case of "Finding Rebecca: The Forgotten Life of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, America's First Black Doctor," illustrator Nicole Tadgell had to balance the need for historical accuracy with the goal of bringing Rebeca's life story into the present!
One of the most important parts of working on a historical picture book is research, attempting to experience what the character experiences as much as possible! Nicole traveled to Beacon Hill in Boston to visit Rebecca's graves and historical home at 67 Joy Street in order to answer the question: What did it FEEL like to be here?
Since there are no known photos of Rebecca Lee Crumpler, only a description of her, Nicole's creative process has to include imagining what Dr. Crumpler would have looked like during the time period in which she was alive.
Then came the actual production of the illustrations, from rough character sketches to match the author's text to revisions, watercolor paintings, and final image adjustments until everything is tied together and sent over to become the final product that will land in the hands of curious readers.
