2022, when the world was slowly starting to open up again. The week leading up to this swell I was working on a short film with @yeti . I hadn’t chased proper waves for the longest time in my life, logistically it was a nightmare trying to work out whether it was feasible or not. A 16 hour layover in NZ later, I finally touched down in paradise. The morning of the swell I paddled out in the dark to an empty line up. I caught two waves before I even saw another human. The second wave I caught that morning will forever be embedded in my mind. Paddling in, I was so over-vert it felt like i was going to tumble down the face and wipeout. I’d only ever had that feeling once before on a “tow bomb” out here, so that’s what I gauged the size of the wave off. Much to my surprise, I somehow got a scoop in, and as I sat up it felt like the whole ocean was closing in on me. I thought for sure I was going to end up in the lagoon. But somehow I was in the belly of the beast, riding out of it. Complete white out and spat into the channel where I’d just scraped over the top before it closed out. I was in complete disbelief. Looking towards the channel marker you could just barely make out the first person paddling out to the lineup. As the morning went on and the crowd filled in, @matahidrollet finally made an appearance. As he greeted me he said, “ good to see you brother.” Before paddling out to take his spot in the lineup he turned back and said “There’s going to be a big one for you today.” He was right. Maybe an hour later all I could hear was Matahi screaming my name. “Where’s Shane? Where’s Shane!?!? GO SHANE, GO!!!” At the top of his lungs. I remember paddling for it and thinking, if you pulled back now, you’ll go over the falls. So I grabbed the bull by the horns and hurled myself over the ledge. That feeling where your stomach’s in your throat from the free fall. For a second I thought I had it. But the bounce was too much. It threw me into a front flip, ripping my legs over my head faster than I’d ever experienced. Looking back at it as I bounced, watching the wave bend on the reef… would have to be one of the craziest views of my life.

With the new @gopro dropping and a year packed with POV action, it only felt right to share this wipeout. Somehow made it out unscathed—can’t say the same for the other fellas this day 👀 😂
