Four tiny friends made some adorable puppets in the Children's Room afterschool Tuesday. Then, they treated us to an impromptu puppet show. What a treat! ♥️

I had such a fun time chatting with @margaretwongassoc at @shakerlibrary on Culture, Writing, and Identity for AAPI Heritage Month. We managed to discuss so much including writing processes, publishing, immigration, Chinese school, changes in intergenerational attitudes/expectations toward education, changes in the Cleveland Asian American community, and more. Thank you to Shaker Library and @shakerhistory for bringing us together! I also want to thank @familydoc_in_akron and @echinesej for bringing sweet treats to celebrate, Lisa at @loganberrybooks for handling sales, my publicist @maraleventhal for being amazing and for figuring out how to make the banner backdrop, and my friend @kristengrabenstein who is the best supporter/connector. Plus all the friends and neighbors who came to listen! I’m so lucky to be in such a great community.

Ms. Maura and Cevanah had a great time showing off the new library logo AND meeting all the rising kindergarteners this past Saturday at the @shaker_schools Kindergarten Kickoff! They shared books that can help families prepare to start school and promoted our Summer Reading program. Some families asked Ms. Maura, "Does my child need to be reading independently to do Summer Reading?" Nope! Summer Reading is for kids 0 - 18, and being read to by a parent, sibling, or audiobook narrator absolutely counts as reading!

Statement Regarding Our April 14 Closure Shaker Main Library was closed as a precaution around 4:30 p.m. yesterday following a report of a possible threat. An individual presented a text message to the officer stationed inside the library, which referenced a potential shooting threat but did not specify a date or time. The officer informed library administrators, who, out of an abundance of caution, decided to close the building. The Shaker Heights Police Department is investigating the origin and credibility of the reported threat, although at this time there is no confirmed imminent danger. The police are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and will maintain an increased presence in and around the library as they continue their investigative efforts. We realize many of you have concerns about ongoing safety and security at the library. We want to reassure you of our commitment to being a safe place. Since last spring, we’ve conducted a security audit and made many of the recommended upgrades to our equipment, processes, staffing, and trainings. We ask our library users and neighbors to continue reporting any suspicious or threatening behavior they see, for the safety of our library community.

This just in: Ohioans LOVE their public libraries! (But we already knew that.) A recent study found that Ohio is FIRST in the nation for library circulation, THIRD for library visits, and FOURTH for library cards.* Our Shaker Library patrons are a part of the reason for that. We love you guys. 🫶♥️ *Rankings are per person among U.S. states, excluding Washington D.C. Data from USAFacts (2023).
