In an effort to deliver a seamless White Oak arched casing for the focal point of our Beacon Hill townhouse project, @robertsondesign hunted down a source hours away at New England Naval Timbers in CT. Milled from felled white oak that serves as a source for shipbuilding endeavors, these pieces were cut to spec at 1/2” thick, 8” wide, and 28’ long. They will be bent and laminated in our shop on a custom form before being installed as a single, seamless arched casing.

Exciting progress at our Somerville Project in Union Square: (1) Front elevation rendering, (2-5) progress construction photos, (6-7) “before” photos.

The new front porch roof is the most important element in reviving the exterior of this home. Having been previously split into two units before our clients purchased in 2016, we have since designed and completed construction on phases I and II to completely overhaul the interior. Now we are finally bringing the exterior up to form.

Last week we had our SHAKE company offsite gathering up in Vermont. We met up at our new construction job site and put in two days of work there, with an incredible night in between. We made and shared delicious food, plenty of laughs, and more than enough spirited competition in the barn (despite only one decent photo emerging from the evening).

Floors are approaching finish by @longflexflooring with all home a/v, automation and lighting in place by @tsp_smart_spaces and @mjackelectric , set in beautiful plaster work by @fields_plastering_ . Millennium doors with a combination of @kuikenbrothers trim packages and some flush EZ Jambs are installed.

Update from our VT project… A walkthrough that starts on the East deck and moves through the great room, kitchen, stair hall and then passes out through the mudroom entry to the South deck, ending at the West gable end of the house where the timber frame of the screened-in porch is coming together.

Bars on bars on bars…. Custom Boral rainscreen above corrugated foundation cladding. The two-tier pattern allows for strategic use of 16’ lengths of material. Spacing and dimension of each batten pattern is carefully calibrated to the window and door layout.

In many ways, if this one problem couldn’t be solved, the project would not have moved forward. Through the creation of an entirely new stair and two new shed dormers, we were able to achieve our clients’ goal. The vanity niche makes use of a bit of space under the common gable while the open floor of the bathroom takes advantage of the new head height in the dormer. Careful consideration was given to insulation and air sealing as well as HVAC and ERV air exchange (which were both competing for valuable inches of space).
