Responding to its surroundings, Little Brick House brings considered light in. Morning sun pours through full-height doors and glazing, while views to the west are filtered by operable blinds that shift with the sun. To the north, highlight windows draw in light while maintaining privacy to the laneway.

Behind The Scenes | Clontarf House by Mathieson Architectsâ
â
For some, a stroll along Sydneyâs Northern Beaches is enough to imagine waking up to rock pools, surf breaks and the soft lapping of water each morning. For others, itâs a reality. Sitting at the point where the Northern Beaches meet the North Shore is Clontarf, a quiet, tranquil suburb that is more alive with family beach days than the bustle of the CBD.â
â
"The home sits at the bottom of a natural slope, just before the water, and has a very close relationship to the waterfront. We wanted to capture a real intimacy between the internal living spaces and the harbour.â â Phillip Mathieson, head architect and founder of New South Wales-based Mathieson Architectsâ

The clientâs brief was to create a modern family home while retaining the bungalowâs charm. The original structure was transformed into the master suite, retreat, and wine room, its character maintained while connected to a striking new addition.â

Site orientation posed a challenge, with west-facing glazing requiring careful design to balance natural light, shading, and privacy. The facade was conceived as a series of shrouds infilled with glazing, providing adaptability across bedrooms, bathrooms, and living zones.â
