The Enigmatic Egyptian vs The Playful Persian
During the reign of the great kings and royal pharaohs of Egypt, roughly between 3,050 B.C. and 900 B.C., at least thirty distinct column styles evolved. Most influenced from reeds, trees and other organic forms. The columns were highly decorated with carved and painted hieroglyphs, texts, ritual imagery, and natural motifs.
Persian columns or Persepolitan columns are the distinctive form of column developed in the Achaemenid architecture of ancient Persia, probably beginning shortly before 500 BCE. They are mainly known from Persepolis, where the massive main columns have a base, fluted shaft, and a double-animal capital, most with bulls.

The SGW team had a very productive All Office meeting today where we discussed our company culture, mission, values, and vision.
This exercise was just one component of a much larger strategic planning initiative that our leadership team is currently in the middle of. Today ensured that our entire team's opinions and ideas were heard! #officeculture #teamwork #strategicplaning #architecturefirm

The Charming Composite VS. The Captivating Corinthian
In ancient Greek architecture, the Corinthian order follows the Ionic in almost all respects, other than the capitals of the columns which are inspired by acanthus leaves growing around a woven basket.
The Composite column is Roman in origin and combines characteristics of the Ionic volutes and the Corinthian acanthus leaves bringing you the best of both orders?
You decide. Comment below and let us know your favorite! #architecture #architecturedesign #competition #classicalordersofarchitecture

The Darling Doric VS. The Iconic Ionic
Originating in the western Doric region of Greece, the Doric is most easily recognized by the simple circular capitals at the top of the columns. According to the ancient architect Vitruvius, this column is associated with more masculine proportions.
The Ionic originating from Ionia is characterized by the use of volutes in the capital, often with fluting in the shaft, and according to Vitruvius has more feminine proportions.
Comment to vote for your favorite column. The poll closes at noon Wednesday, April 3.

Senior Project Architects Kevin Weckman and Mike Aufderheide enjoyed their time at Bisnow's Future of the Chicago Suburbs event. The panel discussions explored how changes in workforce development are shaping suburban communities, the challenges and opportunities of a changing commercial market, and developments that are shaping the suburbs and greater Chicagoland area.

SGW served as Master Planner and Architect for New Urban Communities’ exciting development, Kenilworth Park Townhomes, located in Villa Park, IL. Our master plan was accomplished in multiple phases, the first of which centered around the adaptive reuse of the 1920s Villard Theater. When the theater’s auditorium underwent demolishment previously, the storefront and lobby of the building were preserved. Our team led the design and conversion of that remaining structure into six work/live residences. The former theater served as an anchor for a new 36-townhome development in the second phase of the plan.

We designed this 182,000 sq. ft. building located in Brooklyn, NY to be as-of-right, so our client was able avoid a lengthy New York entitlements process.
Our planning allowed each above-grade level to accommodate double stacked units, fitting what are effectively 4-1/2 stories worth of storage units in the zoning height of three stories. SGW turned the steeply sloping hillside site constraint into an additional benefit by incorporating 3 more “cellar” levels which are not counted under the FAR formula.
We are proud to note that approximately 50% of the building’s energy needs will be satisfied by the significant array of solar panels on the roof.
