My Stepper Motor Acoustic Synth/Drum Machine/Drone Box prototype is nearing completion! Eventually all of this will migrate to its wood and steel enclosure and acoustic chamber. Once that’s achieved, intonating the motors and experimenting with different resonators will be an interesting adventure. Still not quite musical but in due time. Mainly been working on code and figuring out where these motors/drivers sing the best. Still working on MIDI implementation and cool features to tweak the tone of the motors with switches.

Melodyne is a wonderful tool for pitch correction, it’s also a great tool for creating something entirely new.
In this case, the second verse needed some kind of back ground vocal. I took a few different phrases from an early verse and threw them into Melodyne. From there I extended and duplicated notes to create a new melody as well as some chords. After melodyne, I also made use of time stretching and fading to create the background vocal.

A lot of you use drum loops instead of creating your drums from scratch. Here’s is a great method for giving that boring ass drum loop some girth and dimension.
Looking at the screenshot, top to bottom you see loop 1, kick trigger and snare trigger. Copy each kick hit to the kick trigger track and each snare to the snare trigger track. Then use a trigger plugin like Slate Trigger 2 to layer your own samples over the original loop. Be mindful of phase and or tuning and you’ll be in good shape. On the loop track, you could even high pass or carve out space to give the new kick and snare its own space.
If you’re gonna use loops, make them your own. Shortcuts are for hobbyists, not artists.
Discovered this incredible technique using @fabfilter_plugins Saturn to make a boring sound sound more exciting through a video from @buster.odeholm
This works best with tracks with transient information, although I’ve gotten cool results on others.
Setup Saturn with 5 bands, choose your saturation types (can be different for each band); solo each band bringing the drive up to the point of distortion (you may have to increase the input gain), than back off right until the distortion is no longer audible. Balance to taste afterwards. Voila, instant excitement.

I’ve been working on this great song from @jabba_machiavelli which was produced by the great @peteymakesbeats . This part of the song needed to change to help transition from the end of the verse into the hook. I grabbed one of the kicks in the beat and placed it to emphasise Jabba’s cadence. The bottom track was a note I pulled from the beat, time stretched, reversed and then faded into a washy delay. Just using simple delay, filter sweeping, time/pitch shifting and reverb you can achieve awesome effects just using the two-track.

This plugin from @freakshow_industries is truly amazing. I love how I can take a simple idea from years ago and twist into something otherworldly. In the words of its creator, “backmask uses government approved technologies to expose the hidden terrors of music.” Can plugin manufacturers be more creative like this? We have enough 1073 and LA2A emulations.
