Reading voice: Jane Chirwa. Lize’s work invites us to reflect on the idea that our bodies are connected to our roots, our parents, our childhood. How can writing shape these relationships? When we think of memories, we usually picture past experiences stored in our minds. But what about those memories that get imprinted into our bodies? Body memory is the idea that emotional experiences - especially traumatic ones - can be stored in the body, often without the mind even being aware of it. In “Autobiografie van mijn lichaam” (Autobiografie meines Körpers), Flemish author Lize Spit (@lizespit ) explores parallels and relationships between her mother’s dying body and her own, reflecting on the idea that our bodies are connected to our roots, parents, and childhood. Curious? Meet the author for a Reading & Talk in Berlin on May 21. The event will be held in English, and Jane Chirwa (@jane.chirwa ) will read book excerpts in German. Hosted by editor and cultural journalist Malu Schrader (@malu.schrader ). 📍 DAAD-Galerie Berlin 🗓️ Thu, May 21 🕖 Doors 6:30 pm | Start 7:00 pm Free admission, tickets via link in bio! A conversation about growing up in an environment where language can be used as a tool of power and about the price of becoming, and being, a writer. On April 30, Belgian author @lizespit takes the stage at the FU Seminarzentrum for her Inaugural Lecture as Samuel Fischer Guest Professor. Her lecture, „The Magician and the Surgeon: Plot as a Form of Spatial Awareness,“ explores the craft of storytelling and why the literary world has started to treat plot as something unliterary. Today we’re taking a look back to December: #SFischerProf Tash Aw (@tash.aw ) joined Senthuran Varatharajah (@svaratharajah ) at Frohes Festival for "Reclaiming Narratives: Power and Identity in Postcolonial Worlds", a conversation on how power shapes identity in postcolonial societies and how storytelling can reclaim language, belonging, and agency. Alongside the talk, Tash Aw also led a creative writing workshop in a cozy setting and opened up space for participants to develop their own ideas, experiment with voice, and build new narratives. And with that, Tash Aw’s semester comes to an end. We’ll introduce you to the next professor shortly—stay tuned!
