Very excited to finally be able to share work from my time as the Clean Animation Supervisor, on ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’ animated short, based on the book by Charlie Mackesy. This clip is from the opening shot of the film, and was beautifully animated by @andymccollmcpherson . (Please visit his page to see more of his BMFH work.) Animation supervision for this shot was provided by Tim Watts (legend). Once the shot was approved for the Clean Animation stage, an Ink Key Artist would go through and put on model a selection of key frames from the animation - which we coined “Inkies” for this particular production. :) Andrea Minella (Lead Key Ink Animator) provided the initial set of Inkies, then before it was sent through to the “Ink-betweening” (inbetweens) stage, which was the full inking of all frames to turn it into the final inked version of the animation you see on screen, I went through and added a few extra throughout, to help streamline the process. This shot was worked on by so many Clean Animation Artists, mainly because it was just so huge!: David Leick-Burns, Katerina Kremasioti, Patrick Selby, Gerry Gallego, Raquel Juan Maestre, Estefania Romón. (Please give me a shout if I’ve missed anyone!) To help achieve Charlie’s unique ink style but at the same time also making it doable for 2D animation, we had two layers of Ink. The first was the main Ink layer, which was the black, full form of the character. Then the second was a layer of thin lines (“Thinkies”), which are those wispy lines that would move in a fashion that was appropriate to what was happening in the animation. Here they move gently, as the movement is calm and delicate. For faster paced shots, they would be animated with a rapid fluidity, occasionally disappearing and reappearing with the characters’ movement. These thin lines were animated by the Clean Animation Artists to help ensure an organic feel to the final ink look. Back in 2022 I worked on a short film called ‘Peter and the Wolf’ (2023), an animated film based on Bono and Gavin Friday’s illustrated version of the Sergei Prokofiev original. About time I updated my gram with some work :) Last year I had the opportunity to work on the Warframe: 1999 project at @thelineanimation , directed by @venlarvae 🔥 as a 2D Spotkey Artist/Clean Up Artist. Here’s a little reel I put together of a mix of animation inbetweens (first shot only, following Venla’s animation keys), Spot-keys and clean up. For half of this year, I got to work with the lovely crew on new episodes of ‘Hey Duggee’ (Series 5) which came out last week! Please check it out if you can. It may be aimed at the little ones, but there’s plenty of moments that would appeal to us bigger kids out there. 😄 Happy, this little fella here, quickly became my favourite of all the ‘Squirrels’. He’s a little crocodile who used to be afraid of water, is very in touch with his feelings, wears glasses, has a unique backstory, and comes out with the cutest phrases. 💚 s’awight #heyduggee #2danimation #happy #animation

Sometimes it’s not obvious how much work goes into one single shot for a 2D animated piece, and on ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’ we certainly were kept very busy! This particular shot was beautifully animated very early on in production by @andymccollmcpherson , but as a result of an update to the Boy’s character design, required an additional animation pass, where the character needed to be drawn according to the new character design, whilst still retaining the original movement and acting. I stepped in to help at this stage before it went onto the ink keys and ink inbetweening stages. Thought it’d be nice to share this breakdown in honour of International Animation Day (28th October)! A mini personal project I’ve been working on to keep myself busy. The character ‘Tora’ is from a webcomic called ‘Midnight Poppy Land’ designed and created by @lilydusk.art The comic kept me entertained during the various lockdowns of 2020, and I kept it in the back of my mind that one day I’d like to get round to animating one of the panels from the comic. I’ve featured a breakdown of the various stages I went through, from rough animation to final tones and shadows/highlights, trying to recreate Lilydusk’s original artwork as closely as possible.
