Two portraits as Edgard Turqouise. Investigating this strange fortuity that has left me the custodian of one man's wardrobe, for as long as I see fit - so I am wearing these clothes, that date back to the 1880s, and becoming "Edgard" even if just for a few minutes at a time. New print- the tree of life (death and recurrence and the poor who fight the wars) - loosely based off the amazing work of the early 20th century German expressionists who depicted war and its imperialist tendencies in such raw violence. We are in the midst of several imperialist wars without end - Palestine, Iran, Sudan, all names that crop up throughout the last two centuries with British subjugation and now American and Israeli too. This print is about that - it is about rebirth - it is about the unending cycles of it all that we encapsulate more generally as humans and beings that have to live and die in such a short period of time, and in that time grow to carry the weight of history and experience and song. Before we leave this earth, we will hopefully have passed it on, and being vessels and stewards during our time here.

We're back with a snippet of a lesser known Ewan Maccoll & Peggy Seeger song, A Merry Progress to London aka. Rake's Progress. It's an old one, supposedly from the 17th or 18th centuries, about a young country gallant who wanders into London with his inheritance money, has too much fun, and gets chewed up and spat out by the city. Both of us grew up around south London, but we have very different relationships to this intense and thickly layered place. It's always a privilege to peel back those layers to see someone else's London, through folk artefacts like this song.

Relief drawings - sunday - copies of The Devonshire hunting tapestries and one original of Billy Waters, 18th to 19th century sailor and busker, an African Londoner who rose to great acclaim if not money in that period! Inspired by reading about him from the work of @blackbritishfolk

An impression of Edgard Turqouis (now with corrected spelling) in his father's clothes. In another investigation into this strange and miraculous wardrobe I have, there are several distinct layers; this is the earliest collection of the Turqouis family's clothes that I have, around the turn of the 20th century. The frock coat is in remarkable condition, and the dress shirt, but everything else is worn and repaired so many times. The over-coat has rotted in the attic, but perhaps the younger Turqouis kept his father's frock coat in better storage, wearing it from time to time and looking after it. The waistcoat and trouser set are heavily repaired and altered - passed down the family and reused, starting out as formal wear and then being used around the estate. The buttons on the trousers are from Aubert Freres, the shirt from the village of Chinon. There are so many questions that come with this collection - what was the military ribbon for, tied to the lapel of the overcoat? Is this for the 1st World War, or an earlier war? Everything pictured bar the socks, silk top hat, and collar stud, are from the Loudun collection, and all date to around 1890-1920. Thanks to @mallowrooots for the photography! #loudun #paisan #vetementsdetravail #archivalclothing #vintagefashion #antiqueclothing #antiques

A winter portrait/impression of Edgar Turqoit. This is the gentleman whose name is the sole inheritance I have of a history of this family, the one whose clothes I have in my archive now. The only thing not owned by him is my tee-shirt, socks and boots... and boxers. This is the first of many impressions to come, seasonal ones and occupational ones. In the absence of concrete family history I am invoking sympathetic magic perhaps to conjure something of his life - and to document this vast archive of clothing. Here perhaps he is surveying his estate in Loudun and getting ready to 'muck in'. The condition of his clothes indicates that he was more than willing to wear good clothes into oblivion and recall them back. Pictured are all clothes from his estate, dating from the 30s-40s. The shirt with repaired cuffs and the extremely patched long Johns made of a jersey material are my favourite. #loudun #historicalimpressions #historicworkwear #1930sfashion

A bit of The Recruited Collier (18th century or early 19th century) This song is part of a body of anti-recruitment songs that come out of the 18th and 19th centuries, where the army was expanding and wars were being waged on the continent and across the globe. We love to sing this song - it connects us to the long history of people knowing how awful war was, and the effects it has on communities! Came to us through Anne Briggs' version.
