I started making mini doc/video essays while being in the sort of “festival waiting room” for my feature doc about @thecroftonshow . My originally plan was to build a whole YouTube channel of these but I’m feeing more like just sharing them when I want to and sharing myself with the world at a time when we all need more human connection.
So, this first one is about Elliott Smith and his love of the Beatles. I obviously don’t own the rights to any of this footage or music but hopefully it can remain online under the fair use banner. It was a pleasure to see their smiling faces behind the merch counter every night, and I’m still knocked out by the sheer volume of what Paul put together.
The fact that I could make a documentary about this band and, a decade or so later, there could still be enough to fill a 416-page book shows just how deep and complex the music they made was. With so many incredible essays and personal reflections (I wrote a piece for it too!), you’d be hard-pressed to find another book about a band with this much passion and vulnerability between its covers.

43 today and trucking it around the great city of Los Angeles. Saw Pee Wee’s Big Adventure at my favorite theater, bought way too many books at Amoeba and settling in for a fun night with friends. This has been one of the most challenging (if not the most challenging) years of my life but it’s also been the most rewarding and illuminating in a way that’s made it all worth it.
