Come August every surfer on the East Coast USA starts frothing, knowing that inevitably storm systems will begin marching up the seaboard providing swell from the Carribean to Canada. This is a reflection from Hurricane Erin. “Here we are people, we’re talking about Hurricane Erin. I’m actually going to get real serious about this for you all. Hurricane Erin was one of the biggest hurricanes in the past thirty years, not necessarily wave wise, but the actual size of the hurricane. Thankfully, for us on the East Coast, it stayed hundreds of miles off the coast and where I ended up surfing in New England, we actually scored 15’ @ 17 seconds, south swell. The wind wound up being perfeclty offshore. It was truly some of the biggest, best and most classic East Coast beach break I’ve ever seen. It looked like Puerto Escondido out there. We were stoking! We got two days of epic surf with offshore winds before the swell started to disappear and Hurricane Erin worked its way up towards CAnada and off into the northern Atlantic. It’s not common that you get multiple days of waves here on the East Coast, so very blessed for that. Very blessed for no destruction from Hurricane Erin and we scored some of the best waved in recent memory. Whether surfing snowy point break in Rausu, Japan or freediving with dolphins off the coast of Kaikoura, New Zealand, Josh Rosen’s adventures always end in a delicious, hyper local meal. A former pro snowboarder and surfer, Rosen is host of apparel brand Huckberry’s hit food and adventure travel video series, DIRT. Since its debut in 2022, episodes have taken him to far flung parts of the globe, like the volcanic highland of Guadalajara, Mexico, as well as destinations closer to home, including the mountains outside of his hometown of Seattle. Take a deep breath 💙 In the new issue of @sessionthemag magazine, you’ll find a double page with this pic: a giant sperm whale and little @olyaraskina ❤️ Interesting fact, in many languages except English the “sperm whale” called kashalote. A few years ago, in the Azores, I met a marine biologist who told me that one of the theories behind this name actually comes from there. Whaling ships from both Europe and America used to come to the Azores in 19 and 20th century. Sperm whales were not afraid of ships and allowed them to get close, and paid a heavy price for it. Around 70% of the species’ population was killed by humans, pushing them to the edge of extinction. So theory suggests that “kashalote” comes from the phrase “catch a lot,” referring to how easy these whales were to hunt. And here’s some great news: I’ll be announcing an upcoming lecture about whales very soon.
