Project Amu Darya is an environmental oral history initiative founded by three university friends - Annie, Oscar, and James, who spent two months in Uzbekistan interviewing a wide range of people to document the human impact of the Aral Sea crisis; their work culminated in the award-winning documentary Amu Darya: River to a Missing Sea, which explores the dramatic depletion of the Amu Darya River due to Soviet irrigation policies, transforming the Aral Sea from the world’s fourth-largest lake into a vast desert, and shares powerful personal testimonies from Uzbek and Karakalpak communities that reveal stories of loss, resilience, and adaptation as life continues along a river that now flows toward a missing sea.

2026 SES LONDON MARATHON
The countdown is on for Jack Matthews and Team SES in the London Marathon!
We’re thrilled to have a fantastic group representing SES at this year’s TCS London Marathon on Sunday 26 April.
First up is Jack Matthews - grandson of our Founder and Honorary President, Colonel John Blashford-Snell CBE. A seasoned cross-country runner, this will be Jack’s first marathon. An all-round sportsman with a love of football, cricket, and skiing, he has also inherited his grandfather’s spirit of adventure, with expeditions to Mongolia and Zimbabwe already under his belt. Jack aims to raise £3,000 and is already over 60% there – please support him via this link: http://bit.ly/4chc8qw
We’re also delighted to welcome back Robert Horne, who last ran for SES in 2010 and returns with the goal of beating his previous time, and Joining the team for the first time is James McLeish, a passionate ecologist whose work has taken him to the Amazon rainforest and the Galápagos Islands. Inspired by the impact of scientific exploration.
Together, this team reflects everything SES stands for - commitment, courage, and the desire to make a difference.
We are incredibly grateful for their efforts and wish them the very best of luck. Go Team SES!
