It’s that time of the year again: Summer’s winding down and the Sag Harbor Creatives of Color Art Fair is about to go down. Come out this Saturday 8/23 btw 11 am and 5 pm and check out some great works for your walls and shelves.
So this happened in NYC in District Nine on the corner of 132nd and 5th Avenue for over 2 hours last night: men in a large white van launching and retrieving a surveillance drone for more than 2 hours. I called 911 asking that NYPD be sent to investigate, but no one was ever dispatched. I suspect this is ICE feeling completely free to terrorize our communities with impunity despite NYC having strict drone regulations and our status as a sanctuary city. This is what happens when your mayor gets in bed with a fascist.
And just like that, the first 7-week intensive of my SVA @artpractice MFA program has come to an end! It was an amazing experience in large part because of the generous, super talented artists I’m privileged to take this journey with. Can’t wait to see what the fall semester brings and what springs forth from my studio practice!
So excited to be sharing the spotlight tonight at the @artpractice open studio with this amazingly talented 1st year cohort that I’ve been privileged to learn and grow with. Come out btw 6 and 9 pm tonight (8/30) if you’re in the neighborhood (335 W 16th Street)
It’s been a minute since I’ve posted as I’ve been tryna figure out how to be a visual artist in these treacherous social media streets. But, life has been moving along and art school called. I had my first critique of in-progress work yesterday during the summer intensive portion of the SVA @artpractice MFA program I started in June, and I’m excited to say the feedback was very positive. There is air under my wings. Can’t wait to share what these ideas ultimately become! #artschoollife
Tomorrow is serious business y’all! If you haven’t already done so, you better be planning to show up to the polls and vote for candidates up and down the ballot fighting to make sure we still have a democracy as imperfect as it may be and not a dictatorship that serves no one but an abusive chosen few.
Iconic by Shawn Rhea is a mixed media series that recasts several biblical allegories that are ubiquitous in the art world to comment on Black womanhood—how it’s portrayed, dissected, analyzed and mythologized in a digital age. Yesterday’s experience participating in the Sag Harbor Celebrating Creatives of Color event was an amazing day made all the more so by the incredible friends who showed up and supported me every step of the way! I had some wonderful conversations with some super talented creatives and the folks who came through the show. It doesn’t hurt that I also sold a couple of pieces, and my work is now in the hands of two new collectors. Thanks to all!!!
