17 May, 1990. That's the day the WHO removed homosexuality from its list of diseases — a milestone that took decades of advocacy to reach. 🏳️‍🌈 A lot has changed since. A lot still hasn't — which is why showing up still matters, in small ways and big ones. Our BYou network exists for exactly that reason. Visible allyship and everyday actions matter in building a community where everyone belongs. #IDAHOBIT

🌱 The healthier the ecosystem, the lighter the load on our water treatment plants! That's the idea behind our Source Protection Program — 11 partners working across SEQ catchments to look after what's upstream. And here's a part we love. The same work that helps protects our water supply also helps protects the species that call these catchments home. 💧 We're talking: 🐟 Fish homes built for the endangered Mary River cod 🌱 Aquatic plant beds re-established for lungfish 🐨 Trees planted specifically to support koalas and glossy black cockatoos 🐢 Nesting sites protected for the Mary River turtle and white-throated snapping turtle One program. Two wins. 📷 Thank you to @mrccc.org.au for the photos and all our source protection partners for their hard work with this program 👏

Where there’s water, life grows. 🪴 Our lakes and dams help create habitats, support communities and sustain the things we love. This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating all those who nurture life in every form. Happy Mother’s Day from Seqwater.

Best Mother's Day gift? This view. ☀️ Our lakes and parks are open, beautiful, and free. Pack a picnic, find a spot, and stay a while. She deserves it. 📍 Mount Joyce, Lake Wyaralong

They arrived in 2001 and they haven't stopped since. 🐜 Fire ants hitched a ride from South America and found the perfect home in South East Queensland — warm, humid, and free of the natural predators that kept them in check back home. That's a problem. Not just for people who stumble too close to a nest, but for ground-nesting birds, native wildlife, livestock, and whole ecosystems that have no idea what's coming. We’ve joined the fight against fire ants, with staff from across four regional areas trained to spot and report nests. 👀 Want to know what to look for? 👉 Our friends at @nationalfireantprogram have everything you need to identify a nest and report it. 📷 Credit: National Fire Ant Eradication Program

Brisbane’s oldest dam turns 160 this month! Enoggera Reservoir was Queensland’s first major dam. Sitting next to The Gap in Brisbane’s northwest, it has a 33 km² catchment and can hold up to 4,262 million litres of water at full supply. While it’s no longer part of South East Queensland’s drinking water supply, it still has a role in drought resilience if needed. These days, it’s best known as a local spot for walking, swimming, and getting outdoors close to the city. Happy 160 years, Enoggera Reservoir 🎉

Lake Wivenhoe as jelly? We did the maths (because why not): 💧 Lake Wivenhoe currently has about 1,010,520 Megalitres of water 🍇 One 85g packet of jelly uses around 450 millilitres of water That means you’d need roughly… 👉 2.246 TRILLION jelly packets Yep. Trillion. With a T. Good news: we’ll stick to treating the water, not turning it into dessert.

During the First World War, 132 workers from Seqwater’s predecessor—the Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board—enlisted to serve. 12 lost their lives, and many others came home changed forever. Their names are recorded on a Roll of Honour in Brisbane City Hall, but their legacy lives on in the places we enjoy every day—our rivers, our catchments, and the water that connects us. Today, we remember their service, their sacrifice, and the lives behind the names.

🦖 Crazy to think the water coming out of our taps was around when dinosaurs roamed the Earth! The same hydrogen and oxygen atoms — just recycled over and over again. ⚛️ Earth Day’s a good nudge to think about the places water comes from, and the importance of looking after them. 🌳 📸 Wappa Dam

👀 Keep an eye out for this one while you’re out and about! Madeira vine is in flower right now – those long, creamy-white clusters of flowers make it easier to spot. This vine might look pretty, but it’s a transformer weed – it smothers native plants, ruins wildlife habitats, and can take over whole areas along creeks and bushland. 😬 What to look for: 👉 Long hanging creamy-white flowers 👉 Glossy, heart-shaped leaves 👉 Thick vines wrapping around trees Spotted some at our lakes and parks? Let us know! Early action helps protect our waterways and bushland for the next adventure. 📷 First image attribution: John Tann from Sydney, Australia - Madeira vine, CC BY 2.0

🐞 Out at Moreton Bay, a new facility is breeding thousands of bugs—Madeira Vine Beetle (Plectonycha Correntina), Leaf-mining Jewel Beetle (Hylaeogena Jureceki), and Cat’s Claw Tingid (Carvalhotingis Visenda)—to take on invasive weeds like Cat’s claw creeper and Madeira vine. The best part? These little insects only eat the specific invasive weeds and are nature’s own solution — they target the weeds without chemical or manual controls, helping ecosystems recover and keeping our waterways healthy. 👀 Want to see science in action? Community open days are coming soon to the Samford Biological Control Facility — a chance to meet the bugs and learn how they help our environment thrive! 📷: Thank you @annabel_osborne_photography and @pineriverscatchmentassociation for the photos!
