I’m leaving Meta!
It’s clear: we need to stop using Meta products. But how can we do that? Removing Instagram, and especially your account, can feel like cutting your social ties with all your friends, it can almost feel like you’re moving to Antarctica; socially isolated.
But by slowly transitioning to alternative platforms, we can bring our social networks with us. Usage of such platforms need to spread slowly. It takes time to convince people, and by being one of the first to do so, you can trigger a slow revolution.
Read my blogpost “How to leave Instagram without leaving your friends” on why we should leave Meta, and how we can do that. usvdh.com
This evening at @strandedfm ! The first Uncloud Radio of the year, from19:00 to 21:00.
We are joined by @senvanderheide for the second hour. Sen studies Image and Media technologie at the HKU, and has a strong interest in bridging the physical and digital realms. His selection is a reflection of this: truly eclectic and naturally bridging genres and ambiences.
Our host @skanderjaibi will prepare the ground during the first hour.
Tune in! ⚡
During the dates of June 6th-9th, I had the honour of exhibiting my project 'Plant Cohabitation’, together with 15 other students and their works. Thanks to everyone that came to visit! I can't describe how happy I was to have so many friends and family come all the way to see me and the work. A huge thank you to @landhuisoudamelisweerd and every single person involved with the HKU BioDesign Challenge 2024 for making this possible. For more information on the work, please visit the website or see my profile.

Plant Cohabitation In our daily lives, we coexist with more organisms than we realise. The plant that we often see as decoration makes sounds beyond our audible range that many mammals and insects can hear. Their presence in our environment is much greater than we think.
‘Plant Cohabitation’ is a work by Sen van der Heide, offering the audience a moment to reflect on the plants that surround us in our daily lives. By using specialised microphones, Sen van der Heide captures the ultrasonic sounds of plants and transforms them into frequencies audible to humans.
In this installation, the visitor has the unique opportunity to interact with the plant and engage in a dialogue. The work invites us to look at and listen to our green companions in a new way, discovering the invisible and unheard sounds in our everyday environment.
When the visitor talks to the plant, a computer runs the dialogue through various algorithms and artificial intelligence techniques in the background to generate a response. This response is then spoken in with the sounds of the plant, and played back to the visitor.
Starting June 6th, me and 15 other students from the HKU will present our works for the BioDesign Challenge @hku_biodesignchallenge at Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd. You are all invited to come and have a look :) I will be there with my Plant Cohabitation project.

In January this year I had the chance to show my work on the screens of Hoog Catharijne for the @ilightutrecht festival. Thanks to everyone that made it possible!
