The Miami Lighthouse Florida Heiken Children's Vision Program visited Meadowbrook Elementary School to provide complementary comprehensive eye exams and prescription eyeglasses to students in need! 👓 We welcomed the company of Taylor Morancy, the legislative aide to Senator Jason Pizzo @senpizzo (Senate District 37), who spent the day with Heiken's Dr. Tanzila Rahman and Carmen Arguijo. Together, they performed 40 comprehensive eye examinations and provided 15 prescriptions for eyeglasses! 👏 In 2025 our Statewide Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program provided- 👁️ 𝟭𝟲,𝟱𝟬𝟬 Comprehensive eye exams 👓 𝟭𝟭,𝟬𝟬𝟬+ prescription eyeglasses 📝 𝟭,𝟮𝟬𝟬 referrals to doctors for more serious eye conditions All 𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵! Our challenge: Of the approximately 30,700 children requesting or referred to our Heiken program, we only had the funding to reach 16,500 of them, resulting in 14,000 children not receiving this important vision care. Adding to the challenge, the anticipated funding from the State of Florida that we had last year to support our Heiken program is uncertain for the coming year. Yet the need for our program remains: In just 6 months, from July 2025 through March 2026 in Florida, our Heiken program completed 14,918 eye exams, made 999 medical referrals, and dispensed 9,907 glasses, to children statewide, in addition to receiving over 32,600 referrals to our program. My friend, Sidney Holmes is getting compensated for the 34 years he spent in prison as an innocent man serving a 400 year sentence. It took a unified effort from individuals who might see the world differently to make the compensation bill a reality. I want to thank Rep. Michael Gottlieb and @senpizzo for their unwavering support. Also, want to thank our relentless CRU team, Arielle Demby Berger and Sarah Gresham as well as my legislative Director, Daniel Mulieri for keeping everyone together and on track. I want to personally thank Governor Ron DeSantis for seeing the humanity in Sidney and agreeing to sign this bill. There is no amount of money that will give those years back to Sidney, but this is a gesture that recognizes that he was wronged and that we, in the State of Florida and in the justice system, will help him and compensate him. In the first photo I went against conventional wisdom and advice and decided to sit next to Sidney and give him a big hug because it felt right. When I looked into his eyes, I truly believed that I was looking at an innocent man.

PFC Jack Pizzo is now a United States Marine - we get him for 10 days, before he reports back to infantry training, followed by reconnaissance. He earned an “expert” marksmanship badge, and is excited to serve his country. #proudpapa
