This semester I took a Photo 101 class and created a series titled Black Boy Joy. This series is a exploration of Black boys and men of color in moments of joy and self expression. It highlights them engaging in activities and occupying spaces where they feel at home, seen, and welcomed.
âItâs estimated that 70% of Black men will either be dead, on drugs, in jail, or unemployed. Homicide is the leading cause of death for Black men between the ages of 13 and 35, and one out of every four Black men is currently involved in the penal system. Iâm capturing and preserving their image â some kind of evidence of existence.â

for this project, water is symbolic of calmness, clarity, and the subconscious. It reminds us of the non material benefits of nature: reflection, healing, inspiration, memory.

We want to raise questions, hold space for reflection, and portray beauty in the complexity of black life with depth, stillness, and care. âReflection will be ongoing and consistent, rather than
reserved until the endâ - Grace Wales Bonner
