spoke with @danalixenberg for @dazed about her first major retrospective, American Images, currently on view @mep.paris 💗 discussed the myth of the American Dream and the vision behind her powerful work capturing some of the country’s most beloved, provocative, and overlooked figures. her photos remind us, now more than ever, that regardless of who we are or where we come from, we are all human beings & no one is invincible !! special thank you @ohnoitsemilyd for the commission <3
@louisianamuseum <333 my latest obsession…spaces like this can be an escape but they are also a reminder that (as James Baldwin once said), artists are here to disturb the peace !!!!! pls let that always be true 💗💞
I had the privilege of writing about the incredible work of @misanharriman and his latest exhibition The Purpose of Light @hope93gallery in London for @dazedmiddleeast .
Before his assassination in 1972, Ghassan Kanafani wrote: “Imperialism has laid its body over the world…the head in Eastern Asia, the heart in in the Middle East, its arteries reaching Africa and Latin America. Wherever you strike it, you damage it, and you serve the world revolution.” His words echo even more loudly today...our lives are inseparable, no matter how far removed we imagine ourselves to be.
Yet, for too long, the burden of naming and resisting imperial violence has fallen disproportionately on the Global South and its diasporas. This responsibility cannot remain theirs alone. And freedom, as Harriman’s photographs remind us, cannot exist selectively. To ignore one instance of oppression or imperial violence is to remain complicit in all of them.
This is why Palestine remains so central - or the “source code,” as Harriman describes it - of the last functioning imperial project. Until we collectively acknowledge that suffering is structurally interconnected, and that calls for Palestinian liberation reverberate across every site of imperial domination, genuine emancipation will remain impossible.
^^ a (long) snippet of what I wrote in the actual article lol and thanks ofc to the best team @ahmadaswaid@sarraalayyan@zeinkaram@fadynageeb ✨
