In May 2015 the NYC-based Self-Portrait Project traveled to Palestine with a camera, mirror and remote-control device. With Palestine so often in the news as a place of conflict, we were curious about the quotidian details of Palestinian life beyond the violence and uncertainty. And we wanted to find out how Palestinians see themselves. While deeply sympathetic to the humanitarian toll of the occupation, we were eager to explore other dimensions to everyday life as well. In the end, we got a bit of both.
We enabled over 100 people to photograph themselves in seven cities, and in the process produced 17 shoots and 3,000 photos. We traveled to Ramallah, Jenin, Nablus, Susya, Hebron, Bethlehem and Jerusalem over the course of a week. We set up for dancers, after school girls' clubs, nightclub revelers, street life, villagers on the border of the Negev, Jesus' birthplace Bethlehem, university students, and farmers from the largest fair-trade agricultural collective in Palestine - @canaan.palestine

21 days, 1,250 participants, 36,666 honest, beautiful, compelling photos. Thank you to every single person, pup, and feline who braved the line to see yourself reflected in our Pop-Up Portrait Studio on the Lower East Side in the month of August. This post is to honor your energy & vulnerability in contributing to the shared experience we call the “living archive”. As a participatory art concept, we literally could not have done it without you. Much more to come…

Introducing the DiscoShow P̶h̶o̶n̶e̶ Photo Booth, our latest concept built into-and-out-of a reclaimed phone booth 🕺🏻💃🏻🪩📸📞
For this install, which debuted over the weekend at Spiegelworld’s new DiscoShow venue at The Linq Hotel in Las Vegas, we deconstructed and rewired an original Western Electric pay phone to interface with our proprietary technology, embedded behind a two-way mirror installed in one panel of the booth.
To snap a self-portrait, participants follow the directions given through the handset, which include entering one’s phone number and choosing how many photos they’d like to take. The coin release lever triggers the camera’s shutter. After hanging up, the participant receives a text with a link to their personal gallery, from which they can download images, add them to the Self-Portrait Project public archive, or print them on-site. A vintage CRT tv located in another part of the venue displays a live feed of images on constant rotation.
An homage to New York City’s disco era, DiscoShow is the latest entry from Spiegelworld. Highlights include 99 Prince — where the photo booth is located — styled after a gritty NYC subway station serving classic cocktails; Glitterloft, an industrial space filled with over 2000 balloons, reminiscent of David Mancuso’s iconic Loft parties; Diner Ross, a friendly neighborhood “finer diner” ostensibly owned and run by avid New York Mets fans; and the show itself, which places guests at the heart of the celebration.
DiscoShow transports guests to another era; the Self-Portrait Project in turn plays a role in preserving a moment of the experience for participants, lending them a portal to bring a little disco back into the present.

Take your friends to Werk Day.
A friend from @selfportraitp told me that at their last pop up someone came in and was shy but wanted to do a self-loving shoot showing some skin bc they saw someone in kink gear put themself out there – and that was me 🥹. Whether it’s to take a professional headshot, make an album cover, or discover your inner ho, a photo should celebrate YOU, and at Self Portrait Project you’re in control. This time I brought along my friends from the office, so you could say we ✨Werked 💁🏾♂️.

The Self Portrait Project is a social change project, and social change is what I’m after. I’m running for Congress because similar to Andy Lin, I recognize the importance of representation.
Thank you @selfportraitp for the opportunity! Make sure you all stay updated for future portrait pop ups & more!
