Meet Bill Bignell, our lighting repair expert who was ‘Born in England but Made in Select’.
Bill’s had a fascinating 35-year journey with our parent company, Laing O’Rourke, where he wore numerous (hard) hats. He started as a labourer and handyman, before transitioning into the world of stores, where he spent two decades as a dedicated storeman for our sister MEP company, Crown House Technologies. He then joined Select a year ago.
Outside work Bill’s passions is golf, which keeps him fit. In his younger years, his hobby was weightlifting – which might explain his on-site nickname, which is Arnie!
Bill, you’re a shining example of dedication and tenacity, and you’ve seamlessly integrated into our Select family.
We’re thrilled to have you on board!

Meet Tommy Baxter, our newest Stores & Facilities Operative.
Tommy has only been with us for a couple months, and he's already making an incredible impact in his role, specialising in deliveries and stock management.
Before joining our team, Tommy had a fascinating career in the glass industry, where he worked in a warehouse, shaping and cutting glass to perfection. But that's not all; he's also quite the football enthusiast!
Tommy's passion for the game led him down a path to helping others; he started coaching at Charlton Athletic, working with young players from the age of three all the way up to fifteen. From there, he took on a new challenge at Crystal Palace, where he coached their disability team and even organised tournaments at Stamford Bridge. Tommy's commitment to football extends beyond the pitch; he also holds FA coaching badges, a testament to his dedication to improving his own coaching skills.
The highlight of Tommy’s experience with Select has been building strong connections with his new team and quickly settling in, thanks to the wonderful colleagues who have welcomed him to the team.
Join us in giving Tommy a warm welcome!

Today, we want to shine a spotlight on Miki Ciuchi. Since joining the business in January 2023, she has made a positive impression on the team and recently obtained her blue CPCS NOCN card. Here's her story:
What motivates you about working in construction?
The idea of contributing something significant to society is a huge motivation. In the future, I will be able to proudly say I played a part in constructing something important which improves people's lives – be that a hospital, a railway, a new laboratory or a piece of green energy infrastructure. Seeing the tangible results of my work each day and week gives me a sense of achievement and pride.
What moment has stood out to you in your crawler crane operator journey so far?
It's challenging to pinpoint a single moment, as there have been several already. I have occasionally found myself unsure about some aspects of the work – for example on a complex lift – but the experience and support of the team has helped me overcome these moments. Feeling challenged is an important part of the learning process, and my confidence has grown. Here are some standout highlights for me:
• Disassembling an electric crane
• Helping build a tower crane
• Lifting a 30 tonnes crane in the basement (something I don't do every day)
• Building a house from scratch
What advice do you have for aspiring crane operators looking to enter the field?
To those aspiring to become crane operators, I would say, "Don't be afraid to take the leap." Have confidence in yourself, enjoy the training and then have the chance to put it into practice with really experienced people and teams on a live construction site. I can assure you that you won't regret embarking on this journey. Just go for it, and it might be your life's best decision!”

Congratulations to Monika Bardyga for gaining her Crawler Crane Operator qualification and obtaining her blue card.
Despite Monika mentioning that “it was not always an easy journey”, we are proud of her and everything she has achieved.
Monika added “Becoming a crawler crane operator for me was like walking through a door and not knowing what is on the other side of it. But often life is about taking risks, and I’m proud to say I’m a female working in construction.”

Last Saturday, we held our annual family fun day at our St Neots depot, including the hotly contested football match. ⚽️
Despite the weather providing us with four seasons in one day, it was a fantastic day filled with fun, face paints and a delicious BBQ.
Congratulations to the Wincham Wanderers, who won the football for the fourth time in five years, and well done to all the teams who took part.

June is #PrideMonth which is celebrated annually all over the globe to honour the 1969 Stonewall uprising in Manhattan, New York. This uprising marks the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBTQ+ Americans and people worldwide.
This month, Select Plant Australia and Select Plant Hire (UK) will join forces to share their voices and visions to make our industry strive towards a more inclusive one.
