This two-part Issue #SEJournalBackgrounder explores that question, beginning in Part 1 with a look at the government’s part in developing #nuclear power, including through subsidies, as well as why the new reactors built earlier in the 2000s didn’t really make the case for the industry’s rebirth. Nearly as rejuvenating as attending the Society of Environmental Journalists’ annual gathering is perusing the après-conference spoof by contributing quipster David Helvarg. While it seemed he was mostly there unabashedly preselling his forthcoming book, he somehow found time to send up SEJ’s earnest sessions, lambast its blown-up tours and rib its beat dinners. Read his #Chicago roast. Read more: #linkinbio

And the Nina Mason Pulliam Award goes to… 🏆 This year, it belongs to Erin McCormick and Verónica García de León Robles of The Guardian and Quinto Elemento Lab for their investigation into how U.S. hazardous waste is poisoning communities across the border in Mexico and Canada. “Partnering with Quinto Elemento opened up worlds for us that we never knew existed — and created a channel to the people in Mexico who needed to know about this reporting,” McCormick said. García de León Robles described how residents living near the Monterrey facility had long raised concerns about pollution without seeing action. The Nina Mason Pulliam Award recognizes the best of the best — one first-place winner selected across all categories. Their investigation sparked protests in two countries, prompted five plant closures, led to the cleanup of 30,000 tons of hazardous material and caused the company at the center of the story to relocate its most polluting operations. One judge called it among the best public service work they’d ever read. Congratulations, Erin and Verónica 🎉 Read the full investigation at the link in bio. 🔗#SEJAwards
