After getting down on the lake on Saturday ready too do the night I walked the complex and really I couldn’t get on the fish or anywhere near them, so I decided too leave and come back down in the morning just for the day so I could at least get some fishing in over the weekend. I started at the bottom of the lake moving 3 times and I settled on a peg which is actually my favourite peg on the complex (when the fish are there 🤣) and an hour later after putting out the long spinner rigs which I showed in my latest vlog on a trimmed down @secretsquirrelhookbaits candy berry pop up over 30 @stickybaitsofficial Manilas Boilies The rod ripped off and after 10 mins or so she was mine 😮💨🐋

It really is a privilege to fish for these old, English Carp. 🏴
I mean, it is a privilege to fish for any Carp, for that matter; they all demand equal care and respect. However, when there is history behind the lake that you’re fishing, and history behind the stock that you’re fishing for, it does (at least for me) feel all-the-more magical when finally outwitting a Carp and getting to make his or her acquaintance.
It somewhat humbles me, with each and every capture from this place. I’m always very conscious that most of the lake’s stock is likely to be older than me (some are considerably older). To think of all the years that those Carp have simply been swimming around in there, existing, and not to think of the hours ‘wasted’ (& grades I dropped), nearly 15 years ago in my last year at school, sitting at the back of class thinking about this place, doodling swim-maps in the back of my books, instead of paying attention!
With every capture I reflect upon those years that have passed. I think of the many people in my life that have come, and then gone; women, friends, family and all… As Terry Hearn has said before, all of the things that have since happened in life, the places you’ve been, the other adventures, the ups and downs… To think that all-the-while these wiley old carp have been happily swimming around, minding their own business. As I say, truly humbling and a privilege.
I never did get my teeth into this campaign back then, for one reason or another, predominantly because I was governed to fishing it with my old man before I had a drivers license; at the time we were focusing on Boreham Mere. Despite this, I did manage a few fish back then, several of which are still alive today. However, I’m back now, to finish what I started and it feels like I had never left (except the lake is far more mature)… That old adage “fishing is an excuse for just being there” really rings true, as just being there takes me directly back to that era, before life’s weighted complications began to burden me. A care-free era that I will forever cherish and continue to attempt to recreate.
Let’s see what the rest of the season has in store…
