So we spoke to a child Psycologist to learn ways to help our little one through and she suggested many things and one was to create safety through routine. Second Scout has always been more than a business to me. It’s a community. A place where customers, stockists and other small businesses have become treasured friends.
With it being just me running the show, balancing work, family and time off is never easy. So I feel I owe it to this community to explain why I recently disappeared so suddenly.
Four weeks ago, the unimaginable happened. My beautiful, fit and healthy 74-year-old mum became suddenly and critically unwell while staying with us. A catastrophic brain bleed (something none of us could have ever seen coming) changed everything in an instant. Despite remaining unconscious, she fought in ICU for five days. Then, we lost her. Just 24 days after she lost her own mum, my amazing 96-year-old grandmother.
The pain is indescribable. Nothing makes sense or feels real. The layers of grief and trauma are beyond. It’s impossible to imagine life without her.
She cheered me on through every step of Second Scout. Always proud, always believing in me.
And now, as I attempt to find my feet again, I know she’d want me to keep going. My business is my source of income, and while I’m not quite sure how I’m going to continue, I’m going to try.
Just like Mum always told me: “One step at a time, love.”
So that’s what I’m doing.
