Myth #1: “Homeless people are just lazy.”
Many people experiencing homelessness are working, and some have more than one job.
But rent is high, medical bills add up, and one emergency can spiral into a crisis. Add trauma, mental health struggles, and lack of support.
It’s not laziness. It’s a broken system.
You can be part of the solution.

Part 2: A beautiful day of celebration and new beginnings at our ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of our two new duplex homes đź’›
These homes will provide 12 women coming off the streets with more than just a place to stay. They will offer safety, stability, and the chance to rest and rebuild. Each doorway now represents hope, dignity, and the start of a new chapter.
We are so grateful to everyone who joined us for this special moment, and to the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and The Bazaar on Apricot and Lime for generously allowing us to use their parking lot for the event. Your support helped make this celebration possible.

At the menu reveal at Arts and Central, volunteer Kelly Kearns shared her artwork while our residents’ poems were featured on the back of the menus all month long. Moments like these remind us how powerful creativity and community can be when they come together. #togetherness #Sarsarota #mentalhealth #love #homelessness
What a meaningful moment it was as we came together for our Make a Bed, Change Her Life experience đź’›
As we prepared our new duplex homes for 12 women coming off the streets and into a fresh start, each bed became so much more than a routine task. It became a symbol of safety, rest, and the beginning of stability. The first place each woman will sleep without fear. The first place she can truly exhale. The first place she can begin to dream again.
We are deeply grateful to the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and The Bazaar on Apricot and Lime for generously allowing us to use their parking lot, helping make this special gathering possible.
Twelve sponsorship teams came together to ceremonially prepare each bed before move-in day on April 14th, creating spaces filled with dignity, care, and hope for the journey ahead.

Our ladies enjoyed a delicious homemade lasagna, lovingly prepared by our wonderful volunteer Ginny. Grateful for the kindness, comfort, and connection shared around the table. These are the moments that make a house feel like home. #homesweethome
Sarasota is known for its wealth and world-class arts and cultural institutions. But beyond the galleries and stages, many men and women in our community have experienced homelessness and often remain unseen and unheard.
Second Heart Homes recently opened two additional homes and now provides permanent housing for 80 men and women across 13 homes through a unique supportive housing model that combines housing, support and love, all without government funding.
Their documentary The Healing Mirror premiered at the Sarasota Film Festival and has now been made publicly available to watch for free.
Filmed at Sarasota Art Museum and featuring poetry workshops led by Sarasota poet Cedric Hameed, the film follows residents as they explored self-image, self-esteem, fear and triumph through original poetry and reflection, offering a powerful look at transformation through creative expression.
Take a few moments to watch The Healing Mirror and share it with a friend. Your heart will be touched.
