“In ‘A Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic System’ five future-facing fusions of devilish drum programming with original synthesis and field recordings mark out Kop-Z as one to watch for anyone not already keeping a keen ear on the guy who’s maybe best known as one of The White Hotel’s reliable sound engineers. A pivotal cog in the TWH machine since it re-opened after lockdown in 2021, Kop-Z has arguably become its mutant poster-child, embodying the Salford venue’s dare-to-differ steez and naturally experimental bent in his uniquely warped, heavily club-focussed productions.
Raised in Salford and based in the gooch of Moss Side/Rusholme, Kop-Z makes mesmerising music that draws on his Kenyan heritage as much as Manchester’s modernity, splicing his daily practice of observant field recording with mind and body-bending rhythms to give his music a playfully heavy sense of psychogeography and ravishing rhythmic psychedelia. Hyperlocal yet omnivorous in outlook, Kop-Z deploys a rushing flux of flavour and pressure that speaks directly to the madness of the mid 2020s from his unique perspective.
Under a title cadged from a book in a junk shop, Kop messes with ideas of entropy and accelerationism in its complex organisation and disruption of logic. Around a relatively lush but haunting centrepiece wormhole of half step pulses and swarming, headless voices in ‘If I’, he balances the wildness with an emotionally intelligent bias that inflects the cold rush and lash of ‘Ape Essence’ with a sensuous pathos, whilst his canny ear for sampling the texture and spirit of his locale lends deliciously alien frissons of humanity to ‘Eat Go Shop’ and ‘Remote Actions on a Non-Linear Path’, which both take well over 8mins to unfold intricate, abstract narratives ripe for the club as much as headphone absorption.”

@natsumi_hirota_ explores sound primarily as active dialogue, informed by her roots in Tokyo’s jazz scene. Tight geometries of low-end systems negotiate the elasticity of live improvisation, enriched by biographical spoken word and vividly coloured passages of found sound.
By centralising the emergent properties of her source material, Natsumi expresses the situational spontaneity of human existence, inseparable from themes of spatial awareness, time, memory, community, and exchange. Her sound is an extension of human communication, both linguistic and non-verbal; a transient but profound mediator of interpersonal connection.
