Three years ago I was sitting in my home office answering emails when the room suddenly felt like it started moving. At first I thought it was an earthquake. I stood up and everything felt like it was rolling beneath me. I called 9-1-1, but when they answered I couldn’t get my address out. The words coming out of my mouth were slurred and barely made sense. I remember giving them a combination of my Wyoming and Tennessee address. I knew something was wrong. What felt like maybe 10 minutes inside my house was actually about 45 minutes of me stumbling around confused. I remember thinking I should go outside so someone could see me. I could hear sirens somewhere down the street and tried to stand up to flag them down. That’s the last thing I remember. When I woke up restrained at Tristar Summit. They told me I had a stroke….and that I tried to fight a firefighter. (Allegedly) Looking back now I realize I had been carrying a lot. Anger. Stress. Guilt. Grief. Excuses. I told myself I had it under control, but the truth is it was weighing on me more than I ever admitted. Since then, I’ve learned two life lessons: 1. Fuck anyone or anything that disrupts your peace. 2. Indian motorcycles will never be cooler than Harley-Davidson. #secondstrike #harleydavidson #motorcycle #dynabro

I’m still here, and a lot of the people who earned it aren’t. It’s buried in a drawer under random junk because I know exactly what it means. It means someone bled out in the dirt. It means last words no one could hear. It means we came home with blood on our boots while others came home in a box. Someone asked why we include Gold Star families, because they didn’t serve. I said they had no say in any of it and still lost the most. They wake up every day to silence. They carry birthdays, anniversaries, and folded flags. And they don’t get to move on. Just forward, with the weight of what was taken from them. Purple Heart Day isn’t about recognition. It’s about loss. Real, permanent, gut wrenching loss.
