I say I have been a strong lover
Steel, cotton rope, bodily oils, sweat
Drawing its title from Sapphoâs fragment 88b, âI say I have been a strong loverâ explores the paradoxical experience of desire and its effects on the lover. Inspired by the Japanese bondage practice of shibari, the work utilises a combination of metal, textile and bodily materials to evoke a violent yet intimate embrace. Dichotomies of absence and presence, pleasure and pain thus converge in the artistâs attempt at sculpting eros â this force that pushes apart and pulls together.
