Last weekend, 21/22 June 2025, two Royal Marine yachts had a reunion in a blustery Solent.
SEA SCAMP – built in 1936 by Abeking & Rasmussen for the Luftwaffe, was taken as War Reparations in 1945 – part of the “Windfall Fleet” by the Royal Navy and sailed by the Royal Marines from 1946 to 1954, successfully competing in many races. She was then sailed by the Royal Navy and then the Sea Cadets. In 1984 she was sold to a group of enthusiasts who formed the Sea Scamp Syndicate.
OCEAN WAVE, a Halberg Rassy, the current Royal Marine Sailing Club yacht, was skippered by Alastair Grant who had sailed on SEA SCAMP aged 12/13, he later joined the Royal Marines as a teenager in 1961.
Both yachts enjoyed a quiet day’s sail on the Saturday and then a blustery sail on the Sunday in the Solent.
