In the Fall of ‘21 I brought a chorus I had just written to my friend @samsznd . Thankfully, it resonated with her and we were off to the races. We left the session feeling pretty good about what we had but nothing could prepare either of us for what would follow.
Sadly, about week later Sam’s father fell ill and passed away. About 6 months after her loss, my dad suddenly passed away on Easter Sunday. This song quickly felt like a strange foreshadowing for us both. It was a devastating time and it started a season of loss and upheaval in my life that I could never anticipate. A stripping away of basically everything I’d ever known.
“You’ve gotta find peace in your soul, before your body says “time to go”, sweet relief, let ‘em know, all the weight was never yours to hold, it’ll all be fine, the sooner that you realize, that heaven, is a state of mind…”

4 years to the day that we lost you. It was Easter Sunday, we were texting, things were normal. I took a nap mid day and woke up to an entirely new reality. I thought I was still dreaming for a second, I wish I was.
These pics are well before my time with him. I never did approve of the smoking but he sure looked like a badass in 1977.
I chose 4/17 to put out “State Of Mind” to commemorate his passing. It’s the first song he never got hear. But there was a moment shortly after when I was alone listening to an early mix In my car and I deeply felt his presence in the passenger seat. It felt like approval, or I’m insane. Either way.
