Somewhere between psst psting other people’s cats and raising three of our own, we’ve gone from big bright anniversary scribbles to simply wanting to make the most of the day together. From the age of magic pills to the age of magnesium pills, what is love if not moving through time together?
Four years is a lot of time and also the blink of an eye. A time I have come to remember as happy, whole, messy, hard, and filled with more than our share of cats and concerts. Did I say cats?
Through our obstinate need to lock horns and our equally obstinate friendship, through your homecooked gambas (chef’s wife’s kiss!) and our homegrown routines (Modern Family and Friends reruns forever), through our follies and wisdom, we’ve managed to keep growing into each other.
If I sound surprised it’s only because nobody really tells you how hard it is to grow into another person while also growing into yourself. To make room for each other, while navigating new parts of life. It’s heavy work, and I’m SO proud of us for doing it.
You’ve shown me with your patience, there will always be things that we can get right, things that we can do better. I think as long as we are doing them together, and as long as we keep trying, we’re gonna be all right.
May our days of love and labour be filled with the softness of food, writing, shared belief systems and small acts of resistance, of holding each other a little closer when things feel uncertain.
Which is to say, I want our new and I want our old. I want hour-long sit-down breakfasts by a green window, no rushing off, no see you at night. And I want to hobble from one artist stage to another, holding hands, feeling too old and not old enough, asking each other, “Should we have just stayed home with the boys?”.
We will stay home with them the next day, and all of the ones after.
