From my series (on going?) What Time Is It There?
When I first came to Taiwan, it was the first question everyone would ask me for the first 2 years. It would also be followed by "How long are you staying out there?"
After a few years, people stopped asking.
What Time Is It There? Is also a name of a film by Malaysian born/Taiwan based director Tsai Ming Liang. In the film a watch salesman grieves the death of his father and meets a young woman soon leaving for Paris and becomes infatuated. He begins to change all the clocks in Taipei to Paris time, his mother confused by the time change, thinks his father's spirit has come back.
In ways, I miss being infactuated with the "freshness" I felt being here in the beginning, everything felt so cinematic and photogenic. Now, its just different, even though I carry a small film camera every single day.
