My Dear Toby, I’m so glad you are back home with us. On the way to pick you up, we drove through two rainbows—I take that as a sign that you crossed the rainbow bridge safely. We are missing you so dearly, especially Dad, who misses your company late at night when he’s watching TV. We miss you at dinnertime too, when you would always sit beside us, gently tapping our hands for food. This past week has felt like the longest of our lives. Toby, thank you for being my loyal companion for twenty-two beautiful years. Through every season of my life, you never once complained. You were always by my side,my rock, my comfort, my quiet joy. We went on so many adventures together, and no matter what storms or sunshine came our way, you were there. Always there. I wish we could have stayed like that forever. But I know the time has come. As much as I want to hold you here with me, I cannot be selfish. You don’t need to worry about me anymore, my sweet boy. You can rest now. Letting you go was the hardest choice I’ve ever made. I never felt so heartbroken, sick to my stomach with the ache of it, but I could not bear to see you in pain.
