Santa Cruz city firefighters battle a blaze Wednesday night on Ingalls Street. The Santa Cruz Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the 400 block of Ingalls Street at approximately 10:45 p.m. and crews arrived on scene to find a woodworking shop heavily involved, with fire actively consuming the structure, extending to nearby trees, and threatening adjacent residences and neighboring buildings. The incident was upgraded to a second-alarm fire, and with assistance from bystanders and cooperating agencies — including Scotts Valley Fire District, Central Fire District, Felton Fire Department, NETCOM, Santa Cruz Police Department, PG&E and American Medical Response — crews were able to successfully contain most of the fire damage to the original building. A humpback whale spyhops Monday morning in front of a kayaker less than a half-mile offshore from the mouth of the San Lorenzo River in Santa Cruz. Witnesses reported seeing a pod of at least 6 humpback whales feeding in the Monterey Bay off Seabright State Beach and thousands of birds were also at the site. The whales and the birds were likely feeding on a bait ball, which occurs when small fish swarm in a tightly packed spherical formation about a common center. Spyhopping is a behavior exhibited when whales, dolphins, and sharks position themselves vertically with their pectoral fins to visually inspect their surroundings above the water line. After feeding near Seabright the pod swam to the water between Cowell Beach and Lighthouse Point. Photos by Shmuel Thaler - Santa Cruz Sentinel.
