Your wedding vows are more than words — they’re the heartbeat of your ceremony (and one of my favorite things about photographing weddings). As a destination wedding photographer, I’ve had the honor of witnessing couples exchange promises surrounded by the cliffs of Santorini, the gardens of Paris, and the mountains of Utah — and every time, it’s the vows that make everyone tear up (myself included 🥹).
Here’s what I’ve learned about writing vows that truly resonate:
Do: Speak from the heart, not Pinterest.
Write as if you’re talking directly to your partner, not to the guests. Keep it real, simple, and personal.
Don’t: Overthink the length.
It’s not about saying everything — it’s about saying enough. Aim for 1–2 minutes of genuine, meaningful words.
Do: Share memories that feel like you.
That trip you took to Italy, that inside joke, that moment you knew they were “the one” — these are gold.
Don’t: Forget your audience completely.
While it’s personal, remember you’re sharing this in front of loved ones — keep it heartfelt but appropriate.
Print or handwrite your vows on beautiful stationery — it looks timeless in your photos, especially if you’re planning a destination wedding where every detail tells a story. I also love custom books which you can find on Etsy.
Because years from now, when you look back at those photos, it won’t be the decorations you remember — it’ll be the words you spoke and the love you promised.
