In celebration of Ruth Asawa’s 100th birthday, we’re honoring her legacy as one of SCRAP’s founders, and as an artist and educator who believed that art was for everyone.
As SCRAP’s founding board president, Ruth Asawa championed the idea that creativity is a shared community resource. That ethos lives in everything we do—from accessible arts education and the materials in our Depot, to the communities we serve across San Francisco.
SCRAP is one of Ruth Asawa’s gifts to San Francisco. We’re proud to carry her vision forward and grateful to be part of her lasting legacy, every day.

In the practice of perfume-making a foul-note is used intentionally to provide an entourage effect to the otherwise more pleasant scents.
In music: same.
In movies: same.
In SCRAP: variety is the spice of life

Giving clothes a second life > sending them to landfill ♻️
Inspiring creativity and caring for the planet by giving new life to materials once considered waste. At @scrapsf they help people of all ages transform everyday objects into projects that fuel the spirit, strengthen community, and spark environmental awareness.
We loved seeing the community come together at the fix-it clinic with @scrapsf and @sfenvironment 🌱
Repair, reuse, repeat.
