Well: we did it. “Suddenly Seymour” was a silly idea I had five years ago, just before the pandemic shut down everything. My pal Renee was a musical theater pro, and I thought it would be amusing(?) if we did “Suddenly Seymour” from Little Shop of Horrors with her as Seymour and me as Audrey. The role I was born to play (though at the time I had essentially never sung in public as an adult, or in private for that matter). The idea was to do it as a stunt for #MaxFunDrive.
My colleague KT went online and bought the outfit for me. We were ready to plan some rehearsals. And then: everything shut down and life was a miserable hell for actual years. The giant size 47 pumps collected dust in a closet.
Then a month or so ago I realized: we could just… do it?
I emailed Renee and
@scottpassarella and to my shock they were on board. Renee and I asked my music teacher Nicho for a couple lessons to help us arrange it. Scott graciously lugged his keyboard to my shed on two (2) occasions to practice with us.
Then, as the opening number of the #JJGo live show this weekend, we actually did it.
I had honestly forgotten the joy of working hard with fellow artists to get something right. Rehearsing is such a joy, and as awkward as I, Mr. Non-Singer was, it felt so good to improve with the support of two really skilled pros.
Anyway, I’m really proud of it. It’s hardly perfect, but I am not so much proud of the result as I am of working hard on something silly and risky. And of allowing room for a total lark after all these years of being beat down by gd everything.
Anyway, hope you enjoy it. Huge thanks to
@drew_spurs for shooting it, to the
@elysiantheater for hosting us, to my friend and partner
@jordandavidmorris for putting up with it and to all the members of
@maxfunhq who make this nonsense possible.
