🖼️ Between Panels, my short comic with @instanirenren , is now available at NIF until May 31! Link in bio. It's a graphic essay about making comics in, on, and through history. 🌏 (It's also the closest I'll EVER get to writing about myself 🤫) Between Panels was initially published in the Mānoa Journal (@uhpress ) last year, at the invitation of guest editor @laurel.flores.fantauzzo . It was based on a piece from 2019: a hybrid essay in the form of interwoven comic scripts, which I had shopped around for years without success. But after working with Renren for a few months to turn it into a comic, I can no longer imagine the piece any other way. I am such a big fan of Renren's art, and she goes ABSOLUTELY HAM!!! on every single one of these twelve pages. Her illustrations alone are more than worth the price of admission, and together with the words, I think they do something really special. 🎨 I'm grateful to Laurel, UH Press, and to @lawrenceypil , in whose class I first found the threads & the words to start pulling this piece together; and to the estate of Ray Pilapil, Jr., for allowing us to reprint his work. Puzzle 05: Future Past 🧩 Solve interactively at enigmapril.com — link in bio! -— Design notes The prompt to today's puzzle is PATH, which spurred some initial ideas based on Dune and the Golden Path and whatnot. Only to discover that I was wildly unprepared to design any kind of path traversal problems! Which prompted a hard pivot as to what kind of puzzle today's would be. I really like today's puzzle. I think it's the first "observational" puzzle. The past few days felt like very UI-forward puzzles, from the Wordle-esque Puzzle 2, to the scrabble-like Puzzle 3, and the very tactile Puzzle 4. It felt like a swerve was overdue. The time pressure has been very fruitful in forcing me to reckon with my own puzzle design process. I'll have more to say about that as my thoughts crystallize over the coming weeks. In the meantime, I wanted to announce that Puzzle 6 will be published in 3 days' time — on Wednesday! A puzzle a day was feasible over this long Easter weekend, but I need to lay down some runway so I can work on this alongside work and life commitments, BUT ALSO to build some lead time on a couple more ambitious, production-intensive puzzle concepts I want to share with you all. So I think I'll publish daily puzzles from Wednesday to Sunday, and then take a couple days off before the next week. We'll see how it goes. Puzzle 04: Take the... 🧩 Solve interactively at enigmapril.com — link in bio! -— Design notes IT'S PENTOMINOES TIME!!! I have fond memories at math summer camp playing with pentominoes in primary school. So I'm delighted to finally try my hand at one. The subculture of puzzlers who are into polyominoes —the more general word for shapes made up of N unit squares, the most famous of which may be the 4-square tetrominoes, which are tetris pieces — is supremely interesting, and a dangerous rabbithole I almost fell sideways into. You can prove all sorts of things about how many kinds of solutions there might be if you just change one condition or the other. (And because this puzzle needs a drag-and-drop affordance especially on mobile, it took much longer than I thought to massage the code into shape!) I've also been thinking about how to balance EnigmApril with, like, the rest of my life, while also keeping up a good pace to both keep all you lovely people's puzzling appetites whetted, and to honor the daily spirit of the challenge. At the moment I've decided to release puzzles daily from Wednesday to Sunday, and then take Mondays and Tuesdays off. I'll sleep on it and then announce it in a visual tomorrow if it still makes sense. Does anyone read these design notes? If not, can I cuss in here? Fiddlesticks! Puzzle 03: Teasingly 🧩 Solve interactively at enigmapril.com — link in bio! —- Design notes Today's prompt was "CENTER", and after some false starts trying out a puzzle about Pokemon centers, I ended up with this form factor of splitting a word into two halves and going from there. I'm almost certain I've seen this type of puzzle before, but I didn't know what to search and neither did Claude, so I massaged this from scratch. To be clear, I'm against AI hype, and strongly believe it has no business replacing or stealing from artists and creatives. And I certainly don't use AI when figuring out the puzzle design — otherwise there's no point to this whole thing (and the puzzles would probably suck!) But I must admit that it's been very helpful at two things so far. One is getting the website in order. I know enough webdev to know what's going on, but I'm certainly not good enough to spin up what is essentially a whole game everyday. I'm very happy to tell Claude "please disable scroll and external keyboard on Puzzle 2" and let it implement that for me. And yet even with AI, it takes a few hours because of all the moving parts that have to find their place. The second... (cont. in comments)
