Here's one of our finished familiars from the first Spirit Animal Stitching workshop Johanna taught for us back in 2025. Isn't she lovely! This three day retreat is spent learning how to construct a wire armature and organically layer meaningful fabrics and small stitches to create your animal sculpture. Sunny days are for Cyanotyping!! I've been pruning my rampant crab apple tree, and experimented with some blossom prints while the sun was shining. There's nothing more satisfying than rinsing your prints in the sink and watching that blue hue develop! One of our stated objectives from the outset has been to support heritage crafts, and the continuation of traditional skills that will eventually be lost of they are not passed on. Our willow basketry programme is a perfect example of this, and each new class explores a different basket form, rooted in community and tradition. In the past we've explored hen baskets, which yes, were used to carry hens from farm to farm, and baskets for foraging and fruit picking. This time round we'll be looking at Irish Skib baskets, which were traditionally used for communal feasting, for draining and serving potatoes.
