We take over Friends House for a comfy-cozy night of noise—with Markus Floats and members of Montreal free-jazz ensemble Egyptian Cotton Arkestra, and a collective of Toronto improvisers playing with household instruments and implements.
Montréal/Tiotia’ke-based composer and musician Markus Floats takes over Friends House for a night of “cozy skronk”.
Playing alongside members of the free-jazz ensemble Egyptian Cotton Arkestra, Markus Floats weaves his electronic improvisations with the ambient guitar musings of Lucas Huang and the fierce yet soothing tones of saxophonist James Goddard.
Opening the evening are Toronto improvisers HOMEBODIES, an ad-hoc ensemble of local artists—Allison Cameron, Aliyah Aziz, Deniz Tafaghodi, Wesley Shen, and Lucas Dvorsky—bringing together forms of ‘at-home’ listening—including activating a collection of household electric organs—to create a collective, intuitive performance.

✨ Recent highlights from Semblance ✨
These last days we’ve had the privilege to bring two great projects to life:
🎵 SAMMLUNG — our final concert as Ensemble-in-Residence at Fondation ROYAUMONT (2023–2025) — featured the world premiere of Sammlung by Frédéric Durieux, alongside the great music by Nathaniel Otley, performing together with Schola Heidelberg (dir. Walter Nußbaum), and Nanami Okuda (keyboard) and Pierre Bibault (electric guitar). Thank you specially to Michèle Gagliano, Christine Jolivet-Erlih, Jean-Philippe Wurtz and Samuel Agard for your trust and courage
The concert will be broadcast on France Musique on October 22nd!
🎧 Just afterwards, we recorded Ihlara McIndoe’s new piece "The dispersed parts of ourselves" for septet at RADIO FRANCE for the program Création Mondiale — a creation that will be broadcast during the week of October 20. Stay tuned!!
Our heartfelt thanks to all who made these moments possible ❤️— the artists, the institutions, and the audiences who continue to listen and share curiosity for new sound worlds 🥳
Merci au soutien de la Maison de la Musique Contemporaine MMC, à la Fondation Royaumont et à Radio France

✨ Last week, we spent an inspiring residency in Strasbourg, diving deep into the music of Myrto Nizami, Ihlara McIndoe, Nathaniel Otley, Catherine Lamb, Cathy van Eck, and Hugo Bell.
After days of rehearsing, listening, and exploring together, we shared this journey in concert at Atelier M33 on Friday 27th 🎶
💫 A huge thank you to M33 and Robert Menczel for welcoming us and for organizing the beautiful Tiny Moon festival — such a joy to be part of it alongside incredible artists.
🤩 to Michèle Gagliano and Fondation Royaumont for supporting Mirto Nizami's commission to Ensemble Semblance: Into the light of things
🙏 Thank you to Ensemble Linea for opening the doors of their rehearsal space to us all week,
📸 to Philippe Seitz for capturing our process so beautifully,
and ❤️ to everyone who came to listen and support us
🌱 Now, we’re getting ready for our next adventure: SAMMLUNG at Royaumont, coming up on October 5, 2025 — featuring brand new works by Frédéric Durieux and Nathaniel Otley. We can't wait to share it with you
Stay close — more soon!

having a lil show next week 🌅
🌅 iiisa (NYC)
iiisa inhabits intimate songs that emerge from warm sonic landscapes filled with familial chatter and field recordings from their home in Costa Rica. Taking great care, they transform opaque memories into powerful ephemera in hopes of offering solace. Their work has been presented by Roulette Intermedium, Big Eats Festival, and Pioneer Works.
🌅 Sweet Lips (TO)
It’s not pop music, it’s music about pop music. Experimental duo Owen Kurtz and Sierra Weston recontextualize and celebrate the ubiquitous nature of a good pop song—and its ability to be reinvented, over and over again.
☀️hope to see u there ☀️
F is for Friday and Fragmented Forms!
Bringing together experimental musicians from the Labyrinth Ensemble and Jelly Ear, this ensemble plays with improvisation and musical time travel.
Enjoy this imaginative take on historical music as you make your way into the weekend...🐴🛡🤺
