Our kids are not safe online. And one of the biggest questions I keep coming back to is this… Are we expecting children to navigate apps and platforms that most parents don’t fully understand themselves? During the recent online safety roundtable with Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State Kanishka Narayan (@valekanishka ), one thing that came up again and again was education. Because banning apps alone won’t solve this. If children suddenly get access to everything at 16, without parents understanding the platforms, the risks, the language, the trends or the pressures that exist online… are we really preparing families properly? Parents need educating too. Not to become tech experts. Not to spy on their kids. But to actually understand the digital world their children are growing up in. I genuinely want to know what people think about this. Do you think educating parents should be a bigger part of the solution when it comes to online safety? Also, right now the government is asking the public to have their say through the national consultation on children’s online safety, and there’s still time to take part. The link to have your say is in my bio. This is one of those moments where parents and carers can genuinely influence what happens next.

We were proud to welcome Minister Kanishka Naryan to our Youth Town Hall; a space designed by young people, for young people. For many in the room, this was the first time meeting an MP, let alone a government minister. Young people spoke directly about what it’s really like growing up in the digital world, sharing their experiences, challenging ideas, and asking honest questions about the Minister’s role and the future of online spaces. Thank you to @valekanishka for taking the time to listen, engage, and answer all the questions!
